Tesla arrived in India in 2025 with the Model Y, a tidy five-seater. In April 2026 it followed up with the Model Y L, which has the same face, a longer body and an extra row of seats. It is priced at ₹61.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and comes in a single, fully loaded Premium all-wheel-drive variant. The question is whether Tesla has built the family Tesla or just a longer way to spend money.

Design and dimensions
Park it next to the regular Model Y and you will need to look twice. The wheelbase has grown by 150 mm to 3,040 mm, overall length is up 177 mm to 4,969 mm, and the car stands 44 mm taller at 1,668 mm.
The giveaway is the roofline, which stays flatter for longer towards the rear. That is not vanity. It is there to give the third-row passengers some headroom.
Seats and space
Now for the part most buyers will care about. The second row gets two individual captain's chairs, which are heated, ventilated and power-adjustable. The third row gets a pair of heated seats with power recline and their own air vents.
That makes this a 2-2-2 layout, so you get six seats, not seven. Tesla has swapped the middle-row bench for a gap and a bit of luxury. You lose a seat, but you gain somewhere to put your elbows, which is a fair trade. Nobody has ever won a three-across argument in the back of a car.
Boot space
With all three rows in use, you get 420 litres of luggage space, plus a 116-litre frunk. The seats fold electronically, and with them folded Tesla quotes up to 2,539 litres in total.
Cabin and features

Up front, it is classic Tesla minimalism. There is no instrument cluster, and a single touchscreen handles almost everything. You do get an 18-speaker audio system, along with streaming for Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and Netflix.
Tesla has also tuned the hardware for comfort, with adaptive suspension featuring electronic damping, and acoustic glass to keep the outside world, well, outside. The cabin is otherwise very similar to the standard Model Y.
Performance
The Model Y L has two motors and all-wheel drive. Tesla claims a 0 to 100 km/h time of 5.0 seconds and a top speed of 201 km/h. Tesla has not published a power figure for India, but that sprint says most of what you need to know: this is a six-seater that gets out of its own way.
- Battery: 88 kWh (estimated)
- Maximum power: 514 bhp
- Peak torque: 590 Nm
- Transmission: 1-speed automatic
Ride and handling
The longer wheelbase and adaptive dampers are what we will be judging on our roads. Reviewers abroad say the stretch settles the ride slightly compared with the standard car. Here, the proof will be in the potholes.

Range and charging
Tesla claims a range of 681 km on the WLTP cycle. Treat that as a lab number, because fast highway driving with the air-con on will trim it.
Tesla has not confirmed the battery size, but estimates put it at around 88 kWh. On a DC fast charger it can take up to 250 kW, and Tesla claims 288 km of range in 15 minutes at one of its Superchargers. At home, AC charging tops out at 11 kW.
Verdict: who is it for?
If you want a premium EV that carries six people and still feels like a Tesla, this is the only one in India that does it.
That said, ₹61.99 lakh is before on-road costs, so it is no bargain, and there are considerably cheaper three-row EVs on sale. Tesla's presence in the country is also still young, with experience centres in Mumbai's BKC, Delhi's Aerocity and Gurugram.
