What is FASTag and Why is it Important?

FASTag is a digital toll payment system in India. It is a small electronic sticker that sticks to a vehicle's windscreen. The sticker has a unique identification number detected automatically when the vehicle passes through toll plazas on national highways.

The FASTag program was launched by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to make automatic digital payments. It is linked to a prepaid or savings account, and the toll fee is deducted automatically when the vehicle passes the toll plaza.

FASTag is essential because it enables automatic cashless payments at toll plazas, saving time and reducing long queues. Vehicles with FASTag stickers can drive through dedicated lanes without stopping to pay cash, resulting in less traffic congestion and fuel savings. The program also helps promote digital payments across national highways in India.

 7 benefits of FASTag

  • Saves Time: Vehicles with FASTag can pass through dedicated lanes at toll plazas without stopping to pay cash. This saves the time needed to stop, wait in a queue, search for cash and pay the toll operator.

  • Cashless and Contactless: Digital payments are made automatically when the vehicle passes the toll, without needing cash or contacting the toll operator. This is convenient and hygienic.

  • No Need to Carry Cash: With automatic deduction, drivers do not need to keep sufficient cash to pay toll charges, reducing the risk of cash handling.

  • Fuel Savings: Less stopping and waiting in queues at toll plazas reduces idling time and results in vehicle fuel savings.

  • Online Recharges: FASTag accounts can be recharged online through net banking, UPI, credit cards, and mobile wallets. This avoids the need to visit physical recharge points.

  • SMS Alerts: The program provides instant SMS notifications regarding toll deductions, low balances, etc. This helps manage accounts efficiently.

National Access: FASTag enables seamless movement and payments across all national highways and toll plazas in India through a single digital tag.

How long is a FASTag valid for?

Once you buy a FASTag sticker and put it on your vehicle's front glass, you can use it for 5 years. You don't need to renew it again and again.

The FASTag will automatically work for making all highway toll payments across India for five years. But if your FASTag gets damaged or cannot be read correctly, you have to get it replaced by the bank. They will transfer your unused money to the new FASTag.

Also, even if FASTag does not expire, you have to make sure there is enough money in your bank account linked to it. If money gets over, toll payment will fail, and you'll have to pay cash till you add money again.

So, once stuck on the vehicle, the FASTag itself will work for 5 years, but you must recharge it as needed.

How to Purchase FASTag Online Step-by-Step

Buying a new FASTag online is easy. Just follow these simple steps:

  • Go to Website: First, visit the website of any bank or wallet company authorised to sell FASTag online. Examples include Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, etc.

  • Begin Purchase: Click the "Buy FASTag" option and provide the vehicle registration number. Then, choose the FASTag type, a prepaid wallet or one linked to your bank account.

  • Pay Online: You can pay for the new FASTag using internet banking, UPI, a debit/credit card, etc.

  • FASTag Delivered Home: The new RFID FASTag sticker will be delivered by courier to your registered home address within 5-7 working days.

  • Download Mobile App: You can download the "MyFASTag" app by NHAI on your Android or iOS mobile phone via Google Play or the App Store.

  • Activate on App: Open the MyFASTag app. Choose your FASTag issuer bank. Enter the FASTag ID or scan the barcode given on the sticker to activate it.

  • Link Bank Account: Enter account details to link your savings account or prepaid wallet to the FASTag. If necessary, set up an auto-recharge option.

  • Stick on Windshield: Clean the front windshield and stick the FASTag on the inside, per the guidelines. Your digital toll payment tag is now ready!
