HP led the market by a huge margin across PC categories, but its overall share declined slightly YoY.
India’s PC market, including desktops, laptops and workstations, grew by 3.8 percent year-on-year in 2024, according to a IDC’s latest Worldwide Personal Computing Device Tracker report. The premium laptop segment (including gaming laptops) grew by 13.8 percent YoY, while laptops overall grew by 4.5 percent. The workstation PC category grew by an impressive 10.9 percent, and even desktop PCs grew by a modest 1.8 percent.
Year-end sales and preparations for annual Republic Day sales in January helped online retailers improve by 21.7 percent YoY for the whole of 2024, while 4Q25 numbers showed 29 percent better shipments. Consumer purchases grew by 2.6 percent YoY in 2024 while commercial PC shipments grew by 5.1 percent. Government and enterprise purchasing both grew by 10.6 percent YoY in 2024.
HP led the pack in the consumer and commercial segments with a total of 43.45 lakh units shipped, but its total market share dipped slightly from 31.5 percent in 2023 to 30.1 percent in 2024 and IDC’s report highlighted a major 7.5 percent YoY decline in its consumer share due to increasing competition in online sales.
Lenovo was a distant second with 24.85 lakh units, but increased its market share from 16.7 percent to 17.2 percent largely thanks to a consistent online sales push and enterprise sales. In third place, Dell now has a 16.1 percent market share while Acer in fourth place jumped by a significant 27.7 percent YoY to achieve a 15.1 percent market share which the report attributes to strong online sales and aggressive discounts. Asus rounded out the top five with 7 percent of the market, a decline from its 7.9 percent in 2023. Other brands accounted for 14.5 percent.
“The consumer PC market has been on a growth trajectory driven by gaming and AI-powered PCs,” said Bharath Shenoy, research manager, IDC India & South Asia, in a press statement. “The demand for gaming notebooks has been robust, with double-digit growth in FY2024. Also, since mid-2024, shipments of AI-powered notebooks increased substantially as the demand for relatively lower-end AI PCs powered by Intel Core Ultra processors and AMD Ryzen AI processors have seen a steady increase.”
The report does not separately break down numbers for tablet PCs, and also does not distinguish between PCs based on traditional X86 processors as opposed to new Arm-based processors which hit the market in 2024.
