Reason and solution to the expected slump post an unprecedented heatwave
Despite a positive year-on-year growth of 4.66%, two-wheeler sales in India witnessed a slowdown in June 2024. This dip can be attributed to a confluence of factors, with the summer heat playing a major role. We are not just looking at the reasons but also the solution to this slump that is expected post-monsoons.
Two-Wheeler OEM | June 24 | May 24 | Change % | Market Share (%) JUN'24 | May 24 Market Share (%) MAY'24 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
HERO MOTOCORP LTD | 3,97,029 | 4,45,838 | -10.95 | 28.86% | 29.05% |
HONDA MOTORCYCLE AND SCOOTER INDIA (P) LTD | 3,51,422 | 3,90,924 | -10.1 | 25.54% | 25.47% |
TVS MOTOR COMPANY LTD | 2,36,180 | 2,63,293 | -10.3 | 17.17% | 17.15% |
BAJAJ AUTO LTD | 1,53,535 | 1,75, 179 | -12.36 | 11.16% | 11.41% |
SUZUKI MOTORCYCLE INDIA PVT LTD | 73,048 | 81,840 | -10.74 | 5.31% | 5.33% |
ROYAL-ENFIELD (UNIT OF EICHER LTD) | 55,249 | 63,239 | -12.63 | 4.02% | 4.12% |
Looking at the month-on-month (MoM) figures, we can see that all two-wheeler OEMs registered a decline in sales on June 24 compared to May 24. The decline ranged from -10.10% for Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (P) Ltd to -12.63% for Royal Enfield (Unit of Eicher Ltd). When we look at the year-on-year (YoY) market share, a different picture emerges. Most OEMs have managed to hold on to their market share, or even increase it slightly.
The heatwave coincided with the crucial planting season for Kharif crops, which are typically planted in the summer months in India. The heatwave raised concerns about a potential drought. This uncertainty about the upcoming harvest likely led farmers to adopt a cautious approach to spending. They might have postponed non-essential purchases, including two-wheelers, to prioritise essential expenses like food and seeds. A more trivial aspect is that the scorching summer heat discouraged many potential customers, particularly those in urban areas, from visiting showrooms. For some, the heat might have made riding a two-wheeler uncomfortable, prompting them to consider alternative modes of transportation like cars or public transport. Additionally, those who could afford it might have opted for four-wheeler purchases to avoid the heat.
There are reasons to believe that two-wheeler sales could pick up pace in the coming months. Here's what could lead to a revival. The monsoon has finally arrived, covering the entire country ahead of schedule. This is good for the rural market, as a good harvest season would translate to increased disposable income for farmers, potentially leading to a surge in two-wheeler demand. This is crucial as the rural market plays a huge role in the sales of commuter motorcycles, sales for which have witnessed a downfall. Upcoming launches of new two-wheeler models could generate excitement and draw customers back to showrooms. These new offerings could provide a temporary boost to sales.
For a sustained recovery, the industry needs to be mindful of the following things. With the initial sales slump, dealerships might be burdened with high inventory levels. This can lead to a strain on its working capital, as it would have to pay interest on the loan taken to purchase the inventory. To avoid this situation, manufacturers should collaborate with dealers to implement effective inventory management strategies. This could be done through sales forecasting, just-in-time manufacturing and Dealer incentives for slow-moving stock. Also, a focus towards rural market concerns could help in the recovery.
Inflation-based problems can be solved using partnering with micro-finance institutions to offer easy loan schemes for two-wheeler purchases. Fuel-efficient products like the upcoming World’s first CNG motorcycle could be pivotal in improving sales.
The slowdown in two-wheeler sales in June 2024 highlights the industry's dependence on external factors like weather patterns. However, the arrival of the monsoon and the promise of a good harvest offer a glimmer of hope.
