BMW’s S 1000 XR has always been this unique crossover between a traditional adventure tourer and a sports tourer. And for 2024, the Bavarian giants have subtly revamped it in various aspects to make it all the more wholesome. The 2024 iteration of the S 1000 XR is now available in the country with the asking price now set at ₹ 22.50 lakh (ex-showroom India), which is ₹ 1.60 lakh dearer than before. Here’s what’s it is packing differently now:

More POWER!

The 999 cc inline four motor that it shares with the S 1000 RR sport bike is now putting out 170 horses, which is a bump up by 5 bhp. This has been done by optimising the air intake and revising the engine fuel mapping. Hence, the motor can happily sing its heart out to 11,000rpm! Peak torque remains unchanged at 114 Nm at 9,250 rpm.

More PRESENCE

On paper, the seat height has gone up by 10 mm, now standing at 850 mm. BMW states that the seat profile itself is very different as the ‘usable length’ and width is more, and hence, as the press release states, “provides more space for the buttocks.” German sense of humour, maybe? With the revised posture, BMW claims that the rider will have a better control over the motorcycle, be it on the road or the race track, and spanking it around a race track is something we are keen to do.

But if you are concerned about how you can manage this 227 kilo giant with such a relatively tall seat, BMW will also have seat lowering kits that comprises a lower seat and lower suspension. However, in our experience, if you have the right skill set, riding tall bikes becomes less daunting over time.

More STANDARD GOODIES

BMW has thrown in the kitty when it comes to techy bits on the new S 1000 XR. For starters, keyless ignition, dynamic lean-sensitive headlights, and a USB charger are standard from now on. The quickshifter, or as BMW puts it Shift Assistant Pro, is better optimised for slicker shifts. Riding Modes Pro unlocks customisable riding modes that can be preset for future use. Lastly, TPMS, cruise control, heated grips and a 12 Ah battery are now available with the S 1000 XR.

One can further spec out the bike with special M bits like carbon fibre wheels and lighter exhaust system. But all of these will come with quite a lot of extra moolah.

The BMW S 1000 XR remains this unique bike and one can take a look at the Ducati Multistrada V4 or the Kawasaki Versys 1000 for a similar road-only adventure-ish riding feel.
