BYD debuted its latest offering, the 2025 Shark ute, in Mexico. Departing from diesel, this model enters the competitive dual-cab ute segment with a plug-in hybrid powertrain boasting a 429 bhp output. The heart of the Shark is its petrol-electric blend, combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with dual electric motors, one per axle, prioritising electric propulsion with the petrol engine contributing only 20 per cent to overall power. This configuration propels the vehicle from 0-100 kmph in 5.7 seconds, outpacing the Ford Ranger Raptor.
Powered by a 29.5 kWh Blade lithium-ion battery, the Shark claims an electric-only range of up to 100 km, with fuel economy figures of 13.33 kmpl in hybrid mode and 66.67 kmpl when utilising the electric range fully. Combined with a full tank, the Shark boasts a range of up to 840 km. Charging the battery is convenient, with DC fast-charging capabilities replenishing 30 to 80 per cent in just 20 minutes at up to 40 kW. Stylistically, the Shark adopts an assertive design reminiscent of American full-size pickups, featuring bold branding, stacked headlights, and LED lighting elements.
As a global contender, the Shark measures generously within the mid-size dual-cab category, with a robust ladder-frame chassis augmented by an independent double-wishbone rear suspension. However, its payload and towing capacities fall slightly short of class leaders, offering 835 kg payload and 2500 kg braked towing.
Inside, the Shark boasts a spacious cabin with aviation-inspired design cues, highlighted by vibrant orange accents. Technological features include a rotating 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside upgraded voice control and vehicle-to-load capability.
Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate the terrain response system, offering Mud, Sand, and Snow modes for optimized performance. Available in three colours and two variants, the Shark's Mexican launch prices start at $MX899,980 (₹44.95 lakh) for the base GL model and $MX969,800 (₹48.43 lakh) for the flagship GS variant.
