Maruti Suzuki has been India's top passenger vehicle exporter uninterrupted since FY 2021-22, with 17 models being shipped to almost 120 countries.

Maruti Suzuki’s exports of made-in-India vehicles to Japan have cumulatively crossed the 1 lakh unit mark. Suzuki’s home country sources the five-door Jimny, e Vitara electric SUV, and Fronx subcompact SUV exclusively from India, now one of its most important import hubs.

Japan became Maruti Suzuki’s second-largest export market by volume in FY 2025-26, and has maintained that position so far in the current fiscal. The company began exporting the made-in-India Fronx to Japan in August 2024, with the five-door version of the Jimny following in December 2024. India is the company’s exclusive global manufacturing base for the e Vitara, and exports to Japan began in September 2025, before the car even went on sale here as Maruti Suzuki’s first-ever battery EV.

In its home country, Suzuki is now in fact Japan’s top vehicle importer, with nearly all units coming from Maruti Suzuki’s plants in India in the last fiscal.

The Fronx is manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat. Global exports of this model crossed the 1 lakh mark within 25 months and then doubled to 2 lakh units in August 2026, or 38 months. The five-door Jimny, sold as the Jimny Nomade in Japan, received over 50,000 bookings within four days of its launch there, and roughly 75 percent of the first 1,00,000 manufactured units were exported, with global popularity surging even as domestic sales have been slow.

Maruti Suzuki has been India's top passenger vehicle exporter uninterrupted since FY 2021-22, with 17 models being shipped to almost 120 countries. The company accounted for over 55 percent of India’s passenger vehicle exports in Q1 2026-27. More than 1.8 lakh units were exported in the first five months of FY 2026-27. Earlier this month, Managing Director & CEO Hisashi Takeuchi announced that Maruti Suzuki has also become India’s top exporter of EVs, with over 46,000 e Vitara units exported in total so far.

In a press statament, Takeuchi said “The milestone of over 1 lakh exports of Jimny 5-door, Fronx, and e Vitara to Japan is a powerful endorsement of India's manufacturing excellence. This achievement is particularly significant as Japan is one of the world’s most demanding and advanced automobile markets. The export milestone also symbolises the remarkable evolution of the India-Japan partnership. What began as Suzuki's vision to manufacture automobiles in India has come full circle, with Made-in-India vehicles finding strong acceptance among Japanese customers. This success has helped Japan emerge as the second-biggest market for Maruti Suzuki exports.”
