Volvo has officially introduced the new ES90, an all-electric sedan with SUV-inspired design elements, positioning it as an offering in the premium EV market. The 2026 Volvo ES90 will first be available to European customers, with order books opening immediately. Availability in other markets, including North America, will follow later in 2025 or early 2026. Pricing details have yet to be announced, but given its positioning, it is expected to compete with other premium electric sedans like the Tesla Model S and Mercedes-Benz EQE sedan.
The ES90 shares its design DNA with Volvo’s larger EX90 SUV while drawing comparisons to the Polestar 2. It features a three-box sedan profile paired with a liftback-style rear hatch, offering practicality alongside its luxury appeal. Measuring 5001 mm in length with a 3101 mm wheelbase, the ES90 is larger than the Polestar 2 and closely aligns with the Tesla Model S in size. However, it distinguishes itself with a higher ground clearance of 180 mm and an elevated seating position, giving it an SUV-like presence.
Volvo’s signature styling cues are evident, from the “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights to the minimalist interior emphasizing sustainable materials. A standout exterior feature is the rear lighting design, where vertical LED segments flank the rear glass, linking the ES90 to Volvo’s SUV lineup.
- Single Motor: A 92 kWh battery paired with a 328 bhp rear-mounted motor, delivering 480 Nm of torque and a 0-100 kmph time of 6.7 seconds.
- Dual Motor: A 106 kWh battery powers two motors (174 bhp front, 402 bhp rear), producing 436 bhp and 670 Nm of torque with a 0-100 kmph time of 5.3 seconds.
- Dual Motor Performance: The most powerful setup, featuring 295 bhp and 375 bhp motors on the front and rear axles, respectively, for a combined 661 bhp and 861 Nm of torque, achieving 0-100 kmph in just 3.9 seconds.
Volvo estimates that the ES90 will offer a range of up to 650 km on the WLTP cycle for the single-motor variant and 700 km for the dual-motor versions. However, EPA estimates, which tend to be more conservative, are yet to be announced.
A key highlight of the ES90 is its 800-volt SPA2 EV platform, allowing for faster and more efficient charging. The vehicle supports DC fast charging, with Volvo claiming a 10-80 per cent charge in approximately 20 minutes using a 300 kW charger. It will also support bidirectional charging, enabling vehicle-to-home (V2H) energy transfer. It will offer compatibility with both the Combined Charging System (CCS) and Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) via adapters.
Volvo continues to prioritise safety, equipping the ES90 with an advanced driver-assistance suite. A prominent lidar sensor sits atop the windshield, working in tandem with five radar arrays, eight cameras, and a dozen ultrasonic sensors to enable features such as collision mitigation, pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control. Volvo has stated that while some of these technologies may be ahead of their time, they lay the groundwork for future advancements in automated driving.
Inside, the ES90 features an interior radar system capable of detecting occupants with precision. This includes alerting drivers if a child or pet is left inside, potentially preventing heatstroke-related incidents. The cabin also integrates a driver alertness monitoring system to enhance safety.
The ES90 boasts a tech-forward cabin with a 14.5-inch central touchscreen running Volvo’s Google Built-in software suite. This includes Google Maps for navigation, Google Assistant for voice commands, and access to the Google Play Store. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and a Digital Key Plus system allows owners to use their smartphone or smartwatch for keyless entry and ignition.
For audio enthusiasts, Volvo offers a premium 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system, featuring 1,610 watts of amplification, Dolby Atmos, and an exclusive Abbey Road Studio Mode, designed to replicate the acoustics of the legendary recording studio.
