The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has not just grown in dimension, but also gets a bunch of new optional features.
BMW has unveiled the second-generation 2 Series Gran Coupe. Although launched for global markets at the moment, deliveries will start next year, from March onwards. India too is likely to get the new generation model, later next year.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will have two diesel and one petrol engine options, all available with inline-4 configurations. With the petrol engine, the BMW 220 Gran Coupe produces 170 bhp. The diesel engine has two states of tune, 163 bhp and 150 bhp. The former is available with the 220d, and the latter with the 218d. Except for the last option, the BMW 220 and 220d Gran Coupe models are available with a 48V-mild-hybrid setup. Either way, all three powertrains are available with BMW’s latest 7-speed Steptronic transmission, which is standard and has a double clutch.
However, if you’re searching for something more potent, there’s the BMW M235 XDrive Gran Coupe, which comes with a 300 bhp-strong 4-cylinder engine. With this mill, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in just 4.9 seconds. The M Technology package furthers the performance advantage, which gets you 19-inch forged M light-alloy wheels and an M compound brake system – exclusive to the M235 xDrive Gran Coupe.
As for its design, the new second-generation BMW 2 Series Gran Couple gets a new front fascia, characterised by a new grille design, large lower air-inlet, and smoother-in-appeal headlight design. While the rest of the body looks similar to the outgoing model, the rear fascia also sees a few nips and tucks in design. BMW states that the second generation 2 series Gran Coupe has increased in size. It now is 20 mm longer and 25 mm taller, at 4,546 mm and 1,445 mm. Consequently, the wheelbase has also increased by 19 mm at 2,670 mm, and the vehicle's width now stands at 1,800 mm (without mirrors).
Just like the exterior, the interior has also been thoroughly revised and yet the overall layout remains the same as before. So, for example, the seats have been redesigned for better comfort during long journeys. Sitting at the centre of the dashboard might be the same fully-digital 10.25-inch infotainment and instrument display – but it now runs BMW’ latest iDrive based on BMW Operating System 9. Additional features that will be available inside the cockpit as part of the BMW’ Premium Package are wireless charging, automatically dimming interior lights, 2-zome automatic climate control, a panoramic glass sunroof, and a hi-fi sound system from Harmon Kardon.
Safety-wise, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is also available with steering and lane control assist, automatic speed limit assist, and a route speed control when using Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go function. And lastly, Parking Assist Professional is also available as an optional extra, which will allow drivers to control parking manoeuvres from outside the vehicle by just using one’s smartphone via the My BMW App.
For the global market, the new 2nd generation BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will be manufactured at the Bavarian manufacturer’s plant in Leipzig. However, when it launches in India, whether BMW will manufacture the same at its Chennai plant remains to be seen.
