FADA, the Federation of Automobile Dealers’ Associations, has released its all-India vehicle retail data for the month of August. The overall retail figure across all vehicle categories was 24,23,201 units, representing 17.51 percent YoY growth, making this the highest-ever August-month figure. However, this was down 6.48 percent compared to the 25,91,138 units sold last month which was also the best-ever July on record.
However, FADA adds some context here: sales last August were depressed as buyers waited to take advantage of the then-anticipated GST 2.0 rate cuts, and also due to the timing of the festive season. Therefore, a longer-term view after this year’s festive season concludes will provide a more accurate assessment of the overall industry, rather than these YoY figures.
The most noteworthy news is that the combined proportion of alternative fuel passenger vehicle sales at 41.95 percent (CNG 25.28 percent, EVs 7.63 percent, Hybrids 9.04 percent) has overtaken that of petrol vehicle sales, which came in at 40.85 percent, for the first time ever. Just a year ago, petrol had an almost 11 percent lead over its nearest competitor. The main reasons for this are continued uncertainty around the E20 fuel transition, and overall running costs, according to FADA.
Another major trend highlighted in the report is that rural sales growth outpaced urban sales growth YoY in every category. Overall, 48.2 percent of sales came in from rural areas as opposed to 51.8 percent in urban areas, rapidly decreasing the gap between them.
While the tractor segment declined as expected with the withdrawal of the monsoon season, every other vehicle category posted significant growth. Passenger vehicle sales in rural areas registered a 24.99 YoY increase in rural areas vs 10.93 percent in cities. This shows that rural vehicle sales have become increasingly decoupled from agriculture income and the monsoon cycle.
Total EV sales came in at 2,98,448 units, the highest-ever figure for an August month, and a 52.9 percent YoY increase. Electric scooters and bikes crossed the 10 percent threshold in a non-festive month for the first time. Electric commercial vehicle sales also recorded their highest ever month.
Category-wise, 17,14,610 bikes, 1,22,281 three-wheelers, and 4,02,398 passenger cars were sold in August 2026, along with 87,977 tractors, 5,166 construction vehicles, and 90,769 commercial vehicles (light, medium and heavy).
For the financial year-to-date, total vehicle retail sales in India stood at 1,29,37,299 units, up 18.47 percent compared to 1,09,20,136 units for the first five months of the previous financial year.
With multiple important festive dates falling in September this year, a small majority of dealers expect sales this month to rise slightly, even with the prospect of a widening monsoon deficit. Fresh launches and healthy supply pipelines should help. However, dealers report greater optimism for the overall festive season, between now and November. While number will be high, last year's surge due to the GST 2.0 price cuts will affect YoY comparisons, and recent price increases due to higher input costs will also possibly dampen demand compared to last year.
