Apple has released the first set of its promised Apple Intelligence features to the general public, with the release of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1. The updates are now live globally, but might take some time to become available on all devices around the world. Apple Intelligence features will be available on all compatible devices that are set to US English, with localisations and other language support rolling out in phases. Apple Intelligence will work on the recently launched iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max but the only older models that are compatible are the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. It will also be available on any iPad with an A17 Pro, M1 or newer processor, and any Mac with an M1 or newer processor.
Following US English, localised support in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK will roll out by December. While there are no specific dates for other languages and regions, Apple only says wider language support will begin in April 2025 and releases will occur progressively through the rest of the year. Chinese, English (India), English (Singapore), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese are all confirmed, but it isn’t clear when each of these languages will be supported.
In its first phase, Apple Intelligence will include tools for improving writing, summarising notifications and messages, and editing photos. The Siri voice assistant also gets a significant boost in responsiveness and capabilities. The company unveiled Apple Intelligence back in June, promising a unique implementation that prioritises privacy and data security.
The new tools are integrated across iOS, iPadOS and macOS and will be accessible through the default apps and third-party apps, as well as the Siri assistant. System notifications can be grouped and summarised, and a new Focus mode will only show alerts for messages deemed important.
The language tools include AI-assisted proofreading, summarisation, and even content rewriting in a style of the user’s choosing. Text can be checked for grammar, structure and tone, and can be reformatted into tables or lists. The email app will let users generate replies to messages with one tap, and filter important messages based on context. Similarly, audio from phone calls or recordings can be transcribed and summarised, with key points generated automatically.
The Photos app gets more powerful and intuitive natural-language search capabilities along with smart suggestions. Users can search for content within photos or videos, such as a description of a subject or scene. Much like other manufacturers have offered for some time, photos can be edited to remove an unwanted object, replacing it with a generated background.
Interacting with Siri will look different, and the assistant has become more responsive, with the ability to handle stammers and pauses and continue conversations across requests. It can also be used solely through typing and text now.
Apple has not yet announced when other Apple Intelligence features will roll out, but some are already available for testing in beta. Future features that have already been previewed include custom emoji generation, the ability to turn sketches and squiggles into professional-looking illustrations, on-screen awareness for contextual assistance, and even more text and image composition tools. Visual Intelligence, which lets users search for information about and get help with things they point their device cameras at, will be added in December. For even more assistance, ChatGPT integration will available but optional. Requests sent for external processing are not tied to any user’s account information and are not stored. Other services will be offered for integration later.
