Apple's iOS 17 Beta Allows Biometric Authentication Across Web Services
Apple has introduced passkey support for Apple IDs, allowing users to sign in to various websites and services without the need for passwords. The feature is currently available exclusively for users of the first beta for iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma, offering passwordless authentication through Touch ID or Face ID.
With passkey support, beta users can now sign in to any website that supports Apple ID sign-in, including Apple's official websites, such as Apple.com and iCloud.com, and external platforms linked to their Apple accounts. Users can seamlessly authenticate their identities across multiple devices by leveraging the biometric capabilities of their iPhones or MacBooks.
Once a passkey is created on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, it automatically syncs across all Apple devices associated with the user's Apple ID.
Any of these devices can utilize the biometric login methods set up on the originating system for Apple ID sign-in.
Passkeys are not limited to Apple devices, as non-Apple devices running Android or Windows with Chrome or Edge browsers will also support passwordless sign-ins once the feature is fully launched.
It is important to note that passkey support is currently limited to users participating in the iOS 17 beta program, and further refinements and wider availability can be expected as the feature progresses towards its official release.
The introduction of passkey support aligns with Apple's commitment to improving security measures. It forms part of a broader industry-wide effort to create a robust authentication system for digital accounts. By eliminating the need for passwords, passkeys offer a convenient and more secure alternative for users, allowing them to authenticate their accounts swiftly and efficiently.
