According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Apple is gearing up to enter the artificial intelligence (AI) arena with its offerings. The Cupertino giant has been quietly working on large language models (LLMs) similar to those seen in OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard, a move that has sent its shares soaring to a record high, rising to 2%.

According to insiders familiar with the matter who disclosed this to Bloomberg, Apple's internal team has developed an "Ajax" framework, enabling them to create and deploy large language models. The company is reportedly testing an "Apple GPT" chatbot, signalling a possible push into AI-driven virtual assistants.

Apple's famous voice assistant, Siri, has been criticized for stagnating over the years, further underscoring the company's need to explore and develop its AI capabilities. With the help of the Ajax framework, it has already brought about AI-related improvements to search, Siri, and maps.

While Apple has been relatively low-key about its AI ambitions, it has subtly integrated advanced AI features into some of its products, like Apple Photos, on-device texting, and the recently launched mixed-reality headset Vision Pro.

John Giannandrea, the head of machine learning and AI at Apple, and Craig Federighi, the top software engineering executive, lead this AI endeavour. The Bloomberg report indicates that several teams within the company are involved in developing Apple's AI offerings.

In an interview with Good Morning America, Apple CEO Tim Cook acknowledged using ChatGPT and expressed keen interest in the technology. Apple is said to be preparing to make a significant AI-related announcement next year.
