Apple is reallocating substantial resources to create robots designed to follow and assist people in their homes.
Apple is reportedly working on developing personal robots after the company internally announced the dissolution of its decade-long electric autonomous car project, known as Project Titan. According to a Bloomberg report, the iPhone maker is reallocating the substantial resources it had deployed on the project to create robots designed to follow and assist people in their homes.
As Apple seeks to expand its revenue streams beyond the iPhone and services, the company had initially believed that Project Titan could be its next significant product. However, after a tumultuous ten-year endeavour to develop a self-driving car, Apple has now shelved those plans. Many of the staff involved in the project have been redeployed to the company's generative AI efforts, an area where Apple has fallen behind tech giants like Microsoft and Google.
The Cupertino-based company is currently working on a new version of iOS for the iPhone that will incorporate generative AI features. To catch up in this space, Apple has been acquiring a series of AI companies over the past year and has invested billions of dollars. Additionally, the company is collaborating with news publishers to license their content to train its algorithms while also considering licensing foundational models from Google and OpenAI.
Apple's progress in generative AI will first be unveiled on June 10 during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) at its headquarters. The conference serves as a platform to showcase new features of Apple's software platforms. If the company makes significant headway in generative AI, many of those efforts could potentially augment its project on personal robots.
