The German carmaker will unveil the concept models through its three Chinese joint ventures—FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC Volkswagen, and Volkswagen Anhui.
Volkswagen is set to showcase three electric concept vehicles at the upcoming Auto Shanghai event, scheduled from April 23 to May 2, underscoring the automaker’s intensified focus on the Chinese market through its “In China, for China” initiative. The German carmaker will unveil the concept models through its three Chinese joint ventures—FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC Volkswagen, and Volkswagen Anhui—each presenting a distinct electric vehicle designed specifically for Chinese consumers.
FAW-Volkswagen will debut an electric notchback model, while SAIC Volkswagen is set to introduce a B-segment electric SUV featuring range extender technology (EREV). Meanwhile, Volkswagen Anhui will showcase a fully electric SUV. All three models fall within the new energy vehicle (NEV) category and reflect Volkswagen’s commitment to a more localized development strategy.
According to the company, the new approach has significantly accelerated product development, cutting timelines by more than 30 per cent. This streamlining aligns with Volkswagen's broader strategy to cater more directly to the demands of the world’s largest automotive market.
Looking ahead, Volkswagen has announced plans to launch more than 20 new NEV models in China by 2027. Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer reaffirmed the company’s long-term commitment to the Chinese market, stating, “Our ‘In China, for China’ strategy has put us on the right path. Our aim is to remain the leading international automaker in China.”
