The Indian car market saw quite a few innovations in the CNG space.
2024 has been big for the CNG passenger vehicle market, not because of the number of models launched but because of the innovation in this space. The Indian car market received its first-ever turbo-petrol CNG car, a CNG powertrain with an automatic transmission, and more models with twin-cylinder technology for CNG tanks. Let’s take a look at five important CNG cars launched this year.
Launch: September 23, 2024
Price: ₹9 - 14.60 lakh (ex-showroom, India)
The Nexon is the first model in India to get a CNG kit installed on a turbo-petrol engine from the factory. Furthermore, it also gets Tata Motors’ twin-cylinder tech for the CNG tanks, which comprise of two 30-litre tanks to help increase boot space. The standard Nexon has a boot space of 382 litres, while the CNG has a boot space of 321 litres. The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine produces 99 bhp and 170 Nm in CNG mode, and the engine is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. It has features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a panoramic sunroof, a 10.25-inch virtual cluster, and more.
Launch: September 12, 2024
Price: ₹8.20 - 9.20 lakh (ex-showroom, India)
The Swift is a really popular model for Maruti Suzuki, and the fourth-gen model was launched earlier this year. However, the CNG version of the hatchback came later and is available with the same 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine as the regular Swift but produces 69 bhp and 102 Nm. It comes with features like a 7-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, a wireless smartphone charger, and more.
Launch: February 8, 2024
Price: ₹7.65 - 8.75 lakh (Tiago)/ ₹8.70 - 9.40 lakh (Tigor)
The Tiago and Tigor already had CNG kits for a long time and even received the twin-cylinder tech last year. However, Tata Motors upped the ante this year by offering its smallest CNG models with an automated manual transmission (AMT). These are the only two CNG models in India to get an automatic transmission. Apart from this, nothing else has changed in the two models. They come with a 1.2-litre petrol + CNG engine producing 72 bhp and 95 Nm in CNG mode, mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT.
Launch: July 16, 2024
Price: ₹8.50 - 9.38 lakh (ex-showroom, India)
The Hyundai Exter came with a CNG powertrain right from the start, but it’s only this year that it got the twin-cylinder tech. With this, Hyundai India became the second manufacturer to include this tech in its CNG models. While Hyundai doesn’t divulge information about the boot space, the new tech does liberate more space in the boot, making Exter CNG with twin cylinders an even more practical option than before. The Exter CNG’s 1.2-litre engine produces 68 bhp and 95.2 Nm and comes paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.
Launch: November 10, 2024
Price: ₹8.74 - 9.84 lakh (ex-showroom, India)
One of the most important launches for Maruti Suzuki in India this year was the Dzire, as it is the first Maruti Suzuki model to receive a 5-star crash test rating from Global NCAP. Unlike the Swift, the Dzire got a factory-fitted CNG kit right from the start. It also comes with a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder engine that produces 69 bhp and 102 Nm, and is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
