The ambitious project will see charging facilities strategically positioned across 50 major national highway routes and key high-footfall areas.

In a major push to electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, the central government announced plans to setup around 72,000 public EV charging facilities nationwide through an investment of ₹2,000 crore under the PM E-Drive initiative.

Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy led a meeting involving senior representatives from multiple ministries, including Petroleum and Natural Gas, Road Transport and Highways, and Heavy Industries, to fast-track the rollout of EV charging infrastructure.

The ambitious project will see charging facilities strategically positioned across 50 major national highway routes and key high-footfall areas throughout the country. Priority locations include metropolitan centres, highway toll collection points, railway terminals, aviation hubs, petrol stations, and important state road networks.

This infrastructure development is a significant step in India's transition toward sustainable transportation and aims to address one of the primary concerns of potential EV adopters -- the availability of reliable charging networks across the country.

“Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India is on the path to becoming a global model for sustainable transport. The PM E-Drive scheme is a transformative initiative aimed at giving our citizens access to clean, affordable, and convenient mobility options. We are not just building infrastructure; we are building the foundation for energy security and green economic growth,"
