BMW 3 Series, i3 Launched: Neue Klasse Design, Mild Hybrid, New Cabin Tech

BMW has launched the new 2027 3 Series and i3 sporty sedans, which are nearly identical other than their drivetrains. The ICE lineup includes a new BMW 318, 320, and sportier M350 xDrive model, all of which have a 48V mild hybrid system. A PHEV model will be announced next year. On the all-electric side there’s a new i3 40 xDrive and i3 50 xDrive. A prototype BMW i3 M60 xDrive has also been announced. The company says this gives buyers plenty of fuel and engine choices without any compromise to the character and capabilities of the 3 Series.

All electric i3 models are being built at BMW’s recently overhauled historic Group Plant Munich, now dedicated entirely to Neue Klasse production. ICE 3 Series units will be built at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, its largest European manufacturing location.

BMW 3 Series and i3 Design and Interior

Both models show off the company’s Neue Klasse design language that we’ve already seen on the new 7 Series and iX3, translated to the sporty sedan segment. Both versions have a  longer wheelbase than before, with shorter overhangs. They are designed to look athletic and sculptural, with a low stance and prominent contours. Flush door handles, illuminated twin kidney grilles, wide LED taillights, and angled DRLs round out the visual flourishes.

On the inside, buyers will get a tech-heavy cabin with a minimalist, light look. The BMW Panoramic iDrive system replaces a traditional driver’s instrument cluster with a wide Panoramic Vision panel stretching across the dashboard along with an optional 3D head-up display, BMW’s new signature parallelogram-shaped central infotainment touchscreen, and a new multifunction steering wheel with thumb pads.

The large touchscreen measures 17.9 inches across and is angled towards the driver. Buyers can choose an optional Harman Kardon surround sound system rather than the standard hi-fi offering. Each car’s displays, sound, lighting, and drive system can be set up and customised via My Modes.

BMW says its new Operating System X software is designed to show relevant information without causing distractions. It can be controlled using touch or voice commands, with haptic and audio feedback. The new BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant uses Amazon Alexa+ AI, allowing for smooth natural-language interaction. It will roll out gradually across supported markets, starting with Germany and the US. The company promises regular software updates delivering new features and security patches. The optional BMW Digital Premium subscription package includes new mapping capabilities and security features.  

The new 3 Series and i3 feature large panoramic sunroofs and oversized windows for an open, airy ambience. Standard seats include secure lateral support and electric adjustment with memory, with optional rear seat heating.

A wide range of exterior paint options will be offered, with more colours added over time. At launch, there’s an exclusive new shade called M Le Castellet Blue metallic. BMW also offers four interior packages with coordinated colours and materials.

BMW i3 performance, range and charging

The Neue Klasse i3 uses BMW’s sixth-gen eDrive technology, with a new 800V platform, high-voltage batteries, and support for bi-directional charging. The company claims significantly better range and quicker charging than the previous generation. Both the i3 40 xDrive and i3 40 xDrive have dual motors.

The BMW i3 40 xDrive has an 82.8 kWh battery and puts out 275 kW and 374 hp. The maximum claimed range is 710 km per charge (WLTP). Its more powerful sibling, the i3 50 xDrive, features a 108.7 kWh battery and the company claims 912 km (WLTP) range per charge. Ten minutes of DC fast charging at up to 400 kW can give this variant enough power to drive up to 423 km. Power output is 345 kW and 469 hp, with peak torque of 645 Nm. The i3 50 xDrive can go from zero to 100 kmph in 4.7 seconds.

BMW also says its “Heart of Joy” onboard computer is 10X faster than the previous generation, allowing for all drive systems and driving dynamics functions to be controlled together in a single unit for improved responsiveness.

BMW 3 Series engine and performance

The BMW M350 xDrive flagship ICE variant has a 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line petrol engine with a 48V mild hybrid system and crankshaft-driven starter generator. It puts out 326 kW and 443 hp. As the new entry-level BMW M model, it’s capable of going from zero to 100 kmph in 4.1 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 kmph.

The lower-end ICE models feature four-cylinder in-line petrol engines with optional adaptive or adaptive M suspension. A new Drift Moment feature lets drivers send all engine power to only the rear wheels.

BMW 3 Series and i3 safety

All new models across all powertrains use AI for improved safety by partially automating driving and parking operations. Level 2 ADAS includes active safety functions, and a Motorway Assistant enables hands-free driving at up to 130 kmph in 21 countries at the time of launch. Partially automated driving will be enabled in some urban areas next year.
