It shares its motor with the R 1300 GS but it arrives in a different state of tune
BMW has revealed its brand new boxer twin roadster: the R 1300 R. Powered by the same 1300 cc boxer twin as the R 1300 GS twins, the new roadster is the largest one in the Bavarian bikemaker’s portfolio yet. It will be sold in India in a couple of months’ and will likely retail at ₹22 lakh - ₹25 lakh (ex-showroom India).
Following the new BMW R roadster design language, the R 1300 R looks beefy and athletic. It has the right set of muscles to put powerlifters to shame. There are four shades on offer, Snapper Rocks Metallic, Racing Blue Metallic, Lightwhite Uni and Option 719 Kilauea: Blackstorm Metallic.
BMW has made the bike pretty accessible. To start with the saddle height is an accommodating 810 mm, which can further be lowered down to 785 mm for shorter riders. The single-piece handlebar is flat and wide with neutral set footpegs. BMW will also sell you the accessory Comfort handlebar to make it easier for riders on tours. It is quite a porky motorcycle, though, tipping the scales at 239 kilos.
The 1300 cc boxer twin pushes out 145 horses and 149 Nm on the R 1300 R, which is a little less than the GS siblings. Since the naked doesn’t have to haul as much heft as the adventure tourers, the engine peppiness is not likely to be compromised. Furthermore, the bike gets a whole load of electronic rider aids to give the rider better control over the operations. Rain, Road and Eco arrive as standard with Dynamic and Dynamic Pro mode arriving as part of the additional Pro settings. Internationally, the Pro kit might be charged extra but for India, BMW might just bundle it in as standard itself.
More importantly, BMW will offer its AMT gearbox, which is called the Automated Shift Assistant, as an option on the bike. This tech debuted with the R 1300 GS Adventure, which was launched in India at Auto Expo 2025, and is yet to make it on to the standard R 1300 GS. The aid should make commutes less of a hassle while still giving the rider manual control for when needed, especially on weekend thrills.
We expect this roadster to hit the Indian streets in a couple of months. There are no natural rivals of the R 1300 R with the roadster being sort of an out-of-the-box creation, like the Triumph Rocket 3 or the Ducati Diavel V4.
