Hyundai has positioned itself as a formidable player in the entry-level segment in a strategic move that aligns with the surging demand for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles. The recent surge in CNG popularity, averaging at an impressive 6,000 units per month, has paved the way for Hyundai Aura, and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios models to emerge as front-runners, securing a substantial 75 per cent and 22-23 per cent market share, respectively. The Hyundai Exter model also contributes a 20 per cent market share in this sector. On the PV side of business, the company’s SUV range leads the charge accounting for 60 per cent of total sales.
Tarun Garg, COO, of Hyundai Motor India, said, "The CNG models are doing well on the entry-level side of the company's portfolio with the Aura, Grand i10 Nios and the new Exter leading the charge. Going forward, we expect EVs to dominate around 20 per cent, while CNG will contribute about 10 per cent of the company's total sales. The rest of the contribution will be a mix of turbo petrol and diesel."
The shift towards CNG-powered vehicles can be attributed to various factors, making it a sound bet for Hyundai. The cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits associated with CNG have resonated well with consumers, driving robust demand in the entry-level car market. As fuel prices continue to fluctuate, the economical nature of CNG presents an appealing alternative, particularly for budget-conscious consumers.
Hyundai's strategic focus on CNG-powered vehicles is a prudent move, tapping into a market segment poised for significant growth. The decision to offer CNG variants across multiple models demonstrates Hyundai's adaptability to changing consumer preferences and commitment to sustainability.
From a consumer standpoint, the rising cost of traditional fuels has prompted a shift towards more economical options. The CNG variants of Aura, Nios and Exter, with their fuel efficiency and eco-friendly features, are increasingly becoming the vehicles of choice for those seeking affordability without compromising on performance.
