In a surprising turn of events, Nyck de Vries has been dropped from the AlphaTauri Formula 1 team's line-up and will be replaced by Daniel Ricciardo, an eight-time grand prix winner. Red Bull, the parent company of AlphaTauri, has described this move as Ricciardo going "on loan" to the second Red Bull outfit for the remainder of the 2023 season.
The upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix marks Daniel Ricciardo's return to Formula 1 racing. The Australian driver will replace Nyck de Vries in the AlphaTauri team for the rest of the season.
Red Bull Racing Team Principal and CEO, Christian Horner said, “It was great to see Daniel hasn’t lost any form while away from racing and that the strides he has been making in his SIM sessions translate on track. His times during the tyre test were extremely competitive. It was a very impressive drive, and we are excited to see what the rest of the season brings for Daniel on loan at Scuderia AlphaTauri.”
Initially, Ricciardo served as Red Bull’s third driver, but following a strong showcase in the Pirelli tyre test at Silverstone earlier this week has opened doors for him to get back to the front-line.
AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost expressed his excitement about welcoming Daniel Ricciardo back into the team, saying, “There’s no doubt about his driving skill, and he already knows many of us, so his integration will be easy and straightforward. The team will also profit a lot from his experience, as he is an eight-time Formula 1 grand prix winner.”
"I am stoked to be back on track with the Red Bull family!" said Ricciardo.
Meanwhile, Dutch driver Nyck de Vries, who impressed with a ninth-place finish during a one-off drive for Williams at Monza last year, has struggled in his first full-time season of F1 racing. The former Formula E champion hasn’t scored any points this year, contributing to AlphaTauri's position at the bottom of the constructors' standings.
With Ricciardo back in the fold, AlphaTauri will look to improve their position in the standings. Ahead of Ricciardo's debut with AlphaTauri, it remains to be seen whether his driving prowess will turn around the team's fortunes.
