Elon Musk’s unpredictable behaviour is doing Tesla no favours.
According to a Reuters report, a group of French Tesla drivers have filed a lawsuit against the electric car giant, claiming financial losses sparked by a tweet from CEO Elon Musk.
The legal action, lodged in Nanterre, argues that Musk’s social media tantrums caused a dip in their vehicles’ resale value.
Tesla’s sales are also going down in key European markets like France, the UK, Germany, and Italy. This is partly due to backlash against Elon Musk’s political moves. However, the primary reason for this is that buyers are increasingly choosing better-value Chinese electric vehicles.
The plaintiffs, around 400 Tesla owners, allege that Musk’s tweet, the details of which remain unspecified in the suit, triggered a market reaction that devalued their cars.
Represented by lawyer Olivier Wigniolle, the group seeks compensation for what they call a “direct and certain” financial hit.
While the exact tweet isn’t public, Musk’s history of market-moving posts, like his 2018 “funding secured” fiasco, suggests his X activity can rattle Tesla’s stock and second-hand prices.
The lawsuit demands an average of €8,000 per driver, with some claiming losses as high as €15,000. The plaintiffs argue that Musk’s influence over Tesla’s brand and market perception unfairly impacted their ability to sell their vehicles at expected values.
Tesla France, listed as a defendant, has yet to comment, but the case could set a precedent for holding CEOs accountable for their online antics.
Musk’s tweets on his social platform X have long been a double-edged sword, boosting Tesla’s visibility while occasionally also landing him in hot water.
From calling himself “The Dogefather” to sparring with regulators, his tweets often ripple through markets.
This French lawsuit highlights the real-world fallout for owners when Musk’s keyboard gets too lively.
The Nanterre court will decide if Musk’s tweet indeed dented Tesla values. If successful, the case could embolden other owners globally to challenge corporate tweets.
