The new Skoda Superb has grown in size and gets new powertrain options.
Skoda has revealed the fourth-gen Superb. The Czech automaker’s flagship sedan is now slightly bigger than before, has way more powertrain options along with a completely new interior design. Despite being an all-new generation, the Superb still retains the iconic silhouette of the previous-gen model.
The exterior of this new model uses Skoda's 'Modern Solid' design philosophy, representing an evolutionary approach that brings a fresh look. The fascia follows the brand’s design identity with the new octagonal grille with chrome accents, new LED Matrix headlights, and a wide air intake in the front bumper.
The silhouette remains largely unchanged and retains the smooth lines of the third-gen Superb. However, it gets a new alloy wheel design and a new character line. At the rear, it gets new, C-shaped LED tail-lights but the bumper looks similar to the previous gen model but has its own touches.
Skoda’s flagship sedan has grown 43 mm in length and 12 mm in height, but the width remains the same. Even the boot has grown in size, now measuring 645 litres, a 20-litre increase from the previous generation.
The Superb features either a 10-inch or a 13-inch freestanding infotainment touchscreen (depending on the variant) along with a 10-inch digital instrument cluster. Physical-digital knobs for climate control, infotainment, and seat functions, enhancing user-friendliness have a 32 mm display as well as haptic feedback and can be customised. In between the three knobs are four physical buttons for controlling various HVAC functions. Additionally, the gear selector has been relocated to the steering column, optimising central console space for storage. Skoda mentions that all textile materials used in the Superb are made from 100 per cent recycled polyester.
It also has features like ambient lighting, rear AC vents, electrically adjustable front seats with heating, ventilation and massage functions, automatic climate control, USB-A and C chargers, a wireless smartphone charger and a sunroof. The Superb continues to have an umbrella in the driver’s door.
In terms of safety, the Superb offers up to 10 airbags, electronic stability control, and a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features such as turn assist, emergency steering assist, automatic emergency braking and cross-road assist.
Skoda offers multiple powertrain configurations with the Superb, which includes turbo-petrol, diesel, mild-hybrids and strong-hybrid powertrains. Starting off the list is a 1.5-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine with mild hybrid tech and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DSG in Skoda speak) gearbox, developing 148 bhp. This 1.5-litre TSI engine is also used with an electric motor in the Superb Combi iV estate and develops 201 bhp with an all-electric range of 100km and is paired with a 6-speed DSG gearbox.
The Superb also gets two turbo-petrol engine options. Both use a 2.0-litre TSI engine with a 7-speed DSG gearbox. It is available in two states of tune – 201 bhp and 261 bhp – and gets front-wheel drive as standard. However, the latter also gets the option of all-wheel drive. Lastly, the Superb also gets a 2.0-litre TDI engine mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox. It is also available in two states of tune, 148 bhp with front-wheel drive and 190 bhp with front-wheel and all-wheel drive options.
Skoda has not given any information about the India launch of the fourth-gen Superb. However, Skoda did confirm earlier this year that the third-gen Superb will be making its comeback in India next year, albeit through the CBU route.
