Foxconn announced its Foxtron Model D (above), an MUV that partners can fully customise, at the company's Hon Hai Tech Day 2024 event.

Foxconn, best known as the Taiwanese juggernaut contract manufacturer behind some of the world’s most popular smartphones and other devices, is hoping to establish its growing EV business in new Asian countries. Japan in particular is a significant target, according to Jun Seki, Foxconn’s Chief Strategy Officer for EVs, in an interview with Nikkei Asia. While no deal has yet been discussed or signed, the company is interested in cooperating with Nissan. The first products it launches in Japan are likely to be electric buses.

Seki also referenced Nissan’s recent discussions to merge with Honda and its ties to Mitsubishi Motors as reasons to establish a broader agreement between multiple parties in Japan. Foxconn was reported last month to have signed a partnership agreement with Mitsubishi Motors to provide contract manufacturing services for the carmaker’s EVs destined for the Australia and New Zealand markets.

In February, Foxconn denied rumours that it was potentially interested in acquiring Nissan entirely, after merger talks between Nissan and Honda faltered due to disagreements about how the combined entity would be structured. Fresh talks between the Japanese giants might still take place under new Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa, who took over from Makoto Uchida this month.

Honda and Nissan were in discussions to merge, creating one of the world’s biggest automotive conglomerates, partly due to pressure from Chinese manufacturers entering multiple markets around the world with low-cost, high-performance EVs. The companies have been cooperating for a while now, with multiple strategic partnerships to collaborate on developing EVs and connected cars

Foxconn recently showed off multiple new EV spec models, including a minibus and an MUV, joining its previous sedan, SUV and crossover. Its offerings can be customised and rebadged by clients around the world. The company has also recently stated that it has no plans to sell cars under its own name. The company also works with its Japanse subsidiary Sharp on AI and smart vehicle concepts.

The Taiwanese company was also reported to be exploring the possibility of setting up an EV plant in India in 2023. More recently, it announced plans to manufacture battery energy storage systems here.
