Google has added a powerful new feature in Maps that will let users monitor the real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) for all locations in India. This addition to Google Maps, made available to over two billion active users globally, aims to provide useful environmental insights alongside navigation features.

The real-time AQI data helps users make informed decisions about their health and outdoor activities based on local air quality.

Google Maps New AQI Feature

Google Maps now provides hyperlocal air quality indexes (AQI) across India. Users in India can get this information directly within the app.

The Air Quality layer is currently available in more than 40 countries around the world on Google Maps, including the US, Australia, Israel, Chile, Singapore, and others.

The information is displayed in an easy-to-understand format, categorizsd by AQI levels and colour-coded for simplicity. The AQI scale ranges from 0-500, indicating the severity of air pollution in the area.

This lets users stay informed and adjust their plans accordingly, whether they are at home or travelling.

How to Use The AQI Feature In Google Maps

Checking the AQI of a location is simple. To access the feature, follow these steps.

  • Open the Google Maps app on your device.
  • Tap the layers icon in the top right corner of the screen.
  • From the options, select “Air Quality.”

This will display the real-time AQI for the chosen area, helping you assess whether it’s safe to engage in outdoor activities or travel to that destination. The feature is particularly valuable for planning exercise routines, trips, or everyday errands in areas with varying air quality conditions.

Health Tips Based On AQI Levels

In addition to providing AQI data, Google Maps offers practical health advice based on the air quality in your area. Here's how to interpret different AQI ranges:

  • Good to Satisfactory (0–100): Air quality is considered safe for all activities, and outdoor exercise is encouraged.
  • Moderate (101–200): While the air quality is acceptable for most, sensitive individuals (such as those with respiratory issues) should avoid prolonged outdoor exposure.
  • Poor to Severe (201–500): Outdoor activities should be limited, and individuals are advised to wear masks or use air purifiers indoors for protection.
