With rounded corners, the Pixel 8A is expected to be ergonomic
Google's A-series of Pixel smartphones has garnered a loyal following thanks to its affordability and impressive performance. However, reports emerging from the European Union suggest that the upcoming Pixel 8A may break from tradition by carrying a higher price tag than its predecessor, the Pixel 7A. This development is primarily centred around the European market, as the Pixel 8A is expected to be manufactured in India, following Google's announcement last year that the Pixel 8 lineup would be produced locally, potentially offering some cost relief for Indian consumers.
The Pixel 7A, which launched in India at a price point of Rs 39,999, retailed in the European market for around 500 Euros. According to reports, the European pricing for the Pixel 8A could see an increase of approximately 70 Euros, with two variants on offer – a 128GB model and a 256GB variant. The latter, with its larger storage capacity, is rumoured to command a premium price of 630 Euros.
Colour options for the Pixel 8A are expected to mirror those of the more expensive Pixel 8 series, with four hues to choose from: obsidian, porcelain, bay, and mint. If the rumours hold true, consumers can anticipate the Pixel 8A's launch in either May or April.
Under the hood, the Pixel 8A is tipped to be powered by Google's Tensor G3 chipset, a derivative of Samsung's Exynos 2300 with a customised GPU and NPU. The device is also expected to feature 8GB of RAM. In terms of design, the Pixel 8A could sport rounded corners reminiscent of HTC phones from yesteryear, with a dual-camera setup housed in a visor-like area on the back.
While the potential price increase for the Pixel 8A may come as a surprise to some, it remains to be seen how Google justifies the hike, especially in light of the fierce competition in the mid-range smartphone market. Nonetheless, the Pixel A-series has consistently garnered praise for its impressive camera capabilities and software experience, factors that could potentially offset concerns over the rumoured higher price point.
