The clarification comes in the backdrop of a recent blog post by ICICI Lombard, which stated that using E20 fuel in vehicles designed for E10 blends or lower could be interpreted as “negligence”.
The Centre has reiterated that India’s ethanol blending programme is safe, consumer-friendly and economically advantageous, rejecting concerns that the use of E20 petrol could affect vehicle insurance coverage. In a statement, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said it had examined claims suggesting that using E20 fuel could invalidate insurance policies and clarified the issue with relevant stakeholders, concluding that such concerns were unfounded, according to news agency PTI.
"Ethanol blending is a globally accepted practice and is successfully implemented in several countries, including the United States, Brazil, and Japan," the statement said.
It pointed out that Brazil has long operated with higher ethanol blends, with E27 serving as the standard petrol in the country.
According to the government, the ethanol blending initiative has helped India save over ₹1.4 lakh crore in foreign exchange by reducing dependence on crude oil imports. It added that the programme has also created steady demand for agricultural feedstocks used in ethanol production, supporting farmer incomes and contributing to the rural economy.
"Ethanol blending plays an important role in enhancing India's energy security, reducing carbon emissions and advancing the country's transition towards cleaner mobility," the statement said.

The government said it would continue to implement the programme in a “safe, transparent and consumer-centric manner”, guided by scientific evidence and ongoing engagement with stakeholders.
The clarification comes in the backdrop of a recent blog post by ICICI Lombard, which stated that using E20 fuel in vehicles designed for E10 blends or lower could be interpreted as “negligence”, likely leading to claim rejection in cases of ethanol-related damage.
The observation raised concerns among vehicle owners, particularly those with older or E10-compliant vehicles, as E20 is now the standard petrol blend and discussions continue around increasing ethanol content further.
