The government has an ambitious plan to introduce a nationwide cooperative taxi service.
Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday announced the government's ambitious plan to introduce a nationwide cooperative taxi service that could disrupt the current ride-hailing market dominated by private companies such as Uber and Ola.
Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, Shah emphasised the government's commitment to its "Sahkar se Samruddhi" (Prosperity through Cooperation) initiative, positioning the proposed taxi service as more than just a transportation solution, but a transformative economic model, says a report by Economic Times.
“In the coming months, we will establish a large-scale cooperative taxi service, similar to Uber and Ola,” Shah was quoted as saying by the report.
The proposed platform will offer comprehensive transportation options, including two-wheeler taxis, auto-rickshaws, and four-wheeler services.
Notably, the model distinguishes itself from existing private cab-hailing platforms by ensuring that earnings are directly channeled to drivers, rather than being primarily retained by corporate shareholders.
During his address, the HM highlighted the Ministry of Cooperation's sustained efforts over the past three and a half years to develop this innovative approach.
While previous localised attempts like Delhi's Sewa Cab and Kerala's Namma Yatri are there, the central government's direct involvement is said to enhance the likelihood of successful implementation.
The model could reduce operational costs by eliminating intermediary platforms, potentially offering more affordable fares for passengers while simultaneously improving the income streams for drivers.
