India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, Hero MotoCorp has achieved 100 per cent “Zero-Waste-To-Landfill” status, thus solidifying its position as a sustainability leader. This means all of its eight facilities across India out of which six are manufacturing plants in Dehradun and Gurugram in Haryana, Haridwar in Uttarakhand, Neemrana in Rajasthan, Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, and Halol in Gujarat, are sustainable and are generating zero harmful waste.

The OEM managed to achieve this green status by adopting an innovative water-based painting system, which has eliminated Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions and paint sludge. Interestingly, this has also reduced water consumption and Hero MotoCorp claims that the robotic painting process has increased paint transfer efficiency.
Additionally, Hero MotoCorp also emphasises on recycling and reuse in all its plants. Along with upgrading its chemical components in the paint pre-treatment process from zinc-phosphate to zirconium-based treatments. The latter has significantly reduced water and thermal energy usage and has also completely removed the accumulation of hazardous phosphate sludge in the plants.

Speaking on the occasion of this achievement, Niranjan Gupta, CEO of Hero MotoCorp, said, “A booming economy with its ever-increasing manufacturing prowess, our country is still grappling with solid waste management, resulting in overflowing landfills in the hearts of megacities. These landfills have been a source of multiple diseases and public health emergencies apart from posing a detrimental threat to the environment and groundwater reserves.”
“Therefore, as the market leader, we at Hero MotoCorp took up this ambitious initiative to become completely zero waste-to-landfill, thereby setting a guiding example for the industry to follow,” he adds,” he concluded.
