The new Activa-E will also mark the Japanese brand’s entry into the much-coveted electric scooter space in the Indian market.
Honda is all set to debut its first electric scooter for the Indian market. The brand warmed up to this occasion with several teaser promo videos that confirmed several details. What name will be slapped on the e-scooter is still unknown but there is a high possibility of it being called the Activa-E. In all teasers so far, Honda has focussed on the letter ‘E’ a lot, and coupled with the popularity that its Activa scooter enjoys, we think it is quite probable that the marque might carry forward that legacy, albeit in a slightly different avatar. And here’s what the Activa-E will be available with.
The first teaser that Honda released for the Activa-E showed its LED headlight. Unlike the OG Activa, which has its headlight mounted onto the cowl, the Honda Activa-E’s headlight was integrated into the apron. The headlight spans across the length of the apron, and in appeal, it looked very similar to the CUV:e’ design. We recently got a chance to be up and close with the latter in Milan at the EICMA 2024, and you can learn all about that electric scooter in this video.
Honda followed this by teasing the scooter's electric motor and giving us a glimpse of its seat. The latter looked long and wide, which gave us the impression that it should be a spacious enough for two people on board. On the features front, Honda confirmed that there will be two types of instrument clusters on offer: a basic LCD console and a premium TFT option. Via the latter, Honda also showed features like two ride modes, turn-by-turn navigation, and up to 100 km of range (at least) will be available too.
While we are yet to ascertain the battery size of the upcoming scooter, via teasers, Honda has confirmed that the Activa-E will be available with swappable battery technology. In fact, there will be dual-swappable battery options on offer here, both of which will be tucked beneath the seat. This in turn will compromise the scooter’s practicality, for the batteries will be quite big and will occupy significant space. However, the last detail that Honda confirmed yesterday was a pretty nifty solution. The brand showcased a small and compact charger cable. How effective will that be, remains to be seen.
As for its price, we will find out how much Honda prices its first electric scooter. We expect it to command a pretty competitive price tag, after all the electric scooter segment in India has been booming. There are several alternatives here, which boast quite a long list of features. From Ather to Bajaj, to TVS and Ola – scooters from all these manufacturers are currently dominating this segment. Will Honda be able to topple them all? Just like it does with its ICE-powered Activa, it is something that remains to be seen.
