Honda Amaze Crash Test Global NCAP

The Amaze scored two stars in adult occupant protection and zero stars in child occupant protection.

Global NCAP has conducted another round of crash tests for the Honda Amaze. Unfortunately, this time, Honda’s subcompact sedan didn’t do so well. This is Honda’s first result under the new and stringent protocols of the Global that were introduced in 2022. Honda hasn’t updated the Amaze since the new protocol kicked in, so the poorer result is not really that surprising.

When Global NCAP tested the Amaze under the older protocols in 2019, it scored a four-star rating with 14.08 points out of 17. However, this time around, the Amaze scored poorly in adult occupant protection getting only two stars with just 27.85 points out of 34.  In child protection tests, the Amaze couldn’t even manage to secure a single-star rating receiving just 8.58 points out of 49.

So why has the Amaze not scored well? It boils down to the fact that the Amaze is still available with dual airbags as standard and doesn’t get electronic stability control as standard and only has a seat belt reminder for the driver’s seat.

Alejandro Furas, Global NCAP Secretary General, said, “Regrettably Honda did not take the opportunity to update the Amaze with more safety features which explains its disappointing score.”

For child occupant protection, Global NCAP noted the head contact in the frontal impact test. Surprisingly, the 1.5-year-old child’s dummy had the risk of being ejected and the 3-year-old child’s dummy had high loadings in the chest and the neck.

The subcompact sedan can effectively protect the head and neck. The chest is at quite a big risk in both frontal and side impacts. This protection level has remained unchanged since the Amaze was last tested in 2019. And since it only gets two airbags across the range, Global NCAP did not even test the Amaze for a side impact with a pole.

The Amaze is based on a platform which is derived from the fourth-gen Honda City, which was also tested under the older protocols and secured four-star ratings for adult and child occupant protection. The City has gotten a new generation since but that is yet to be tested.

Commenting on the result, Honda Car India said, "At Honda, our unwavering commitment to safety is evident in the meticulous engineering of our products, integrating advanced active and passive safety technologies across our entire model range. We are dedicated to continuously working to enhance our vehicles on all parameters of safety and improve them further at model change timing."

This second-generation Amaze has been on sale in India since 2018, and its facelift is also three years old now. The third generation is expected to debut towards the end of this year. Would that be safer than this one? We’ll have to wait and watch.
