HMSI President and CEO Tsutsumu Otani said the company is increasing capacity not only to meet rising domestic demand but also to support exports to international markets.
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) expects to create more than 3,800 jobs as it expands its annual production capacity to around 8 million units by 2028, reinforcing India's growing role in Honda Motor Co.'s global manufacturing and export strategy, PTI reported.
HMSI President and CEO Tsutsumu Otani said the company is increasing capacity not only to meet rising domestic demand but also to support exports to international markets, as India continues to strengthen its position within Honda's global operations.
HMSI currently exports two-wheelers to 65 countries, including mature markets such as Japan and Europe. According to Otani, exports have risen steadily from 0.36 million units in FY24 to 0.51 million units in FY25 and 0.62 million units in FY26, reflecting India's increasing importance as a global production hub for Honda.
The company presently has an installed annual production capacity of more than 6 million units across four manufacturing facilities located at Manesar in Haryana, Tapukara in Rajasthan, Narasapura in Karnataka and Vithalapur in Gujarat.
As part of its expansion plans, HMSI recently announced a third production line at its Tapukara plant with an investment of around ₹1,500 crore. Scheduled to commence operations in 2028, the new line will add annual production capacity of 670,000 units, taking the plant's total capacity to 2.01 million units.
The company had also announced a fourth production line at its Vithalapur facility in Gujarat in 2025, involving an investment of ₹920 crore.
The new line, expected to begin production in 2027, will add annual capacity of 650,000 units, increasing the plant's total capacity to 2.61 million units and making it Honda's largest motorcycle manufacturing facility globally.
On the company's electrification plans, Otani said electric mobility remains a key part of Honda's long-term strategy, while reiterating that the company will continue to pursue multiple powertrain technologies in India.
