Let’s take a closer look at the sales performance of these models during April-July 2024.
India’s automotive market continues to witness a strong shift toward utility vehicles (UVs), driven primarily by the surging demand for SUVs. According to the latest data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), UVs have emerged as the dominant category, accounting for 63 per cent of total passenger vehicle (PV) sales in the first four months of FY2025. Out of the 868,132 units of UVs sold during this period, the lion’s share comes from the SUV sub-segment, which is increasingly becoming the preferred choice for Indian buyers.

Let’s take a closer look at the sales performance of these models during April-July 2024.
1. Hyundai Creta took the crown as the best-selling SUV during this period, clocking an impressive 63,752 units. Its blend of features, brand reputation, and consistent performance makes it a favourite among urban buyers looking for a reliable and feature-rich compact SUV.
2. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza closely followed with 59,147 units sold. The Brezza’s recent updates, including a revamped design and modern tech offerings, have made it a strong contender in the subcompact SUV segment.
3. Another standout was the Tata Punch, which sold 56,345 units. Despite being positioned more as a micro-SUV, the Punch's affordability and rugged appeal have attracted significant attention, making it a key volume driver for Tata Motors.
4. Mahindra Scorpio maintained its dominance with 53,068 units, driven by its strong road presence, off-road capabilities, and loyal customer base. The Scorpio’s positioning as a rugged SUV has helped it remain popular despite newer entrants.
5. Tata Nexon reported sales of 34,691 units, reflecting a decline compared to its competitors. Once a best-seller, the Nexon now faces stiff competition from newer models like the Fronx and the Taisor.
6. Maruti’s crossover, the Fronx, recorded 47,580 units, showing that the company’s strategy of launching a feature-packed compact crossover is resonating well with buyers.
7. Hyundai’s other subcompact SUV, the Venue, registered 37,177 units, supported by consistent demand in the urban market due to its blend of features and performance.
8. Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara sold 36,463 units, reflecting solid demand in the compact SUV space. The Grand Vitara’s hybrid technology and Maruti’s vast service network have worked in its favour.
9. Kia Sonet, with 34,609 units sold, continues to perform well, especially among younger buyers seeking a stylish and tech-savvy subcompact SUV.
10. Lastly, the Mahindra XUV 3XO rounds out the top 10 with 33,381 units. Known for its safety features and solid build, the XUV 3XO remains a popular choice in its segment.
The subcompact SUV segment, in particular, continues to be a major growth driver. Models like the Brezza, Punch, and Venue reflect the growing demand for affordable SUVs that are versatile enough for both city commuting and highway drives. The compact SUV segment, led by the Creta and Grand Vitara, remains attractive for buyers seeking a balance between space, features, and a premium feel.
