Hyundai India has high expectations from Exter, aspiring to achieve satisfactory crash test ratings at Global NCAP.
The new Hyundai Exter is the latest micro-SUV to join the company’s SUV range in the country at an introductory starting price of Rs. 6 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Rivaling the Tata Punch, the new Hyundai Exter is the most feature-loaded vehicle in its segment, not just by offering first-in-segment safety features but also providing the most number of standard fitments. While the Exter aims to outshine its rivals, the Punch has already made a mark in terms of safety, by achieving an impressive 5-star crash test rating at Global NCAP, highlighting Tata's commitment to prioritising safety.

Amit Kumar Dhaundiyal, Head of Group (AVP), Product Strategy & Planning, Hyundai Motor India, said, “To score a 4 or a 5-star crash test rating at Global NCAP, it is not mandatory for a vehicle to come with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and curtain airbags as a standard fitment. Currently, no other competition in the entry-level micro-SUV segment can be certified with this rating as per the new protocol.”
The stringent safety norms of Global NCAP have become a benchmark for evaluating a vehicle's crashworthiness and occupant protection. In this regard, Hyundai India has high expectations from Exter, aspiring to achieve satisfactory crash test ratings.
Dhaundiyal added, “As for the Hyundai Exter, it has been launched with 6 airbags, and ESC across all trims, but as we have yet to get the car crash tested, we cannot comment on any rating yet. But, if tested, we do expect it to score satisfactorily.”
Hyundai is offering a number of safety features as a standard fitment across all the variants, such as 6 airbags (a first in an entry-level SUV), ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, impact sensing auto door lock, seat belt reminder for all, 3-point seat belts for all, and seat belt pre-tensioner, to name a few. Even ESC, Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Hill Start Assist (HSA), and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) are offered as an option on the base version.
The importance of ESC and curtain airbags in achieving favourable GNCAP ratings cannot be overstated. According to revised safety standards, both ESC and curtain airbags are now mandatory as a standalone option for vehicles aspiring to achieve a 5-star safety rating. In this regard, the Hyundai Exter meets the eligibility criteria. Global NCAP also focuses on other significant safety considerations, such as side-impact and pedestrian-protection tests, which the Exter appears to be well-prepared for.
With its abundance of safety features and a commitment to setting new benchmarks, the Exter aims to redefine the segment's safety standards. Hyundai has gone above and beyond by offering not only first-in-segment safety features but also ensuring the highest number of standard fitments, underscoring the company's dedication to providing safety for all its customers.
