The carmaker has already set up Tamil Nadu’s first battery sub-assembly facility for EV powertrains.

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) on Thursday outlined plans to position southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu as its primary electric vehicle (EV) hub for India. As part of the announcement, HMIL and the Tamil Nadu government also confirmed a dedicated skill development partnership aimed at improving global employment prospects for the state’s youth.

“HMIL’s initiatives will strengthen Tamil Nadu’s leadership in sustainable mobility and automotive excellence, while also accelerating skill development to foster a future-ready workforce. We will roll out two new models from the Chennai facility, including our first mass-market dedicated EV within this year, marking a significant step towards accelerating EV adoption and building a strong EV ecosystem," Tarun Garg, MD & CEO – HMIL, said in a statement.

"Alongside, advancing EV localisation, we are equally focused on developing a future-ready skilled workforce, enabling talent to support future automotive technologies. HMIL has so far exported over 3.9 million vehicles made in Tamil Nadu to more than 150 countries, a shining example of how world-class manufacturing in the state is driving India’s journey towards becoming a global automotive powerhouse," Garg added.

The carmaker has already set up Tamil Nadu’s first battery sub-assembly facility for EV powertrains and is continuing efforts to localise power electronics and other critical components. These steps align with the state’s broader objective of strengthening its position as a major EV manufacturing base.

HMIL has also established a DC fast-charging network in Tamil Nadu comprising 39 stations and 78 charging points. The infrastructure is distributed across key urban centres and transit routes, aimed at improving usability and supporting wider EV adoption.

The company also indicated that it plans to expand this network further over the next two to three years, in line with its strategy to introduce more accessible electric vehicles in the Indian market.
