The redesigned SUV debuts in South Korea with a boxier "Art of Steel" look and a new XRT variant, but Hyundai has made no commitment to bring it back to India after axing the outgoing model last year.

Hyundai Motor Company has unveiled the fifth-generation Tucson in South Korea, marking the nameplate's first full redesign in six years and introducing a markedly boxier silhouette in place of the outgoing car's curved styling. The reveal, held this week, covered design, dimensions and cabin technology, with powertrain details and market-specific launch plans withheld for now.

The new Tucson adopts Hyundai's "Art of Steel" design language, replacing the softer "Sensuous Sportiness" philosophy that shaped the current model. At the front, vertical H-edge daytime running lamps sit alongside a horizontal light bar using an indirect lighting technique, while squared wheel arches and an illuminated H motif reinforce the more upright, rugged stance.

The SUV has also grown. At 4,700 mm long, 1,905 mm wide and 1,685 mm tall on a 2,785 mm wheelbase, it is 60 mm longer, 40 mm wider and rides on a 30 mm longer wheelbase than its predecessor. Hyundai says second-row headroom has increased by 29 mm to 1,031 mm, and rear doors now open to 83 degrees, up from 73 degrees, easing access for rear passengers.

Inside, the cabin has been redesigned around Hyundai's new Pleos software platform, an Android Automotive-based system that also underpins recent launches such as the Palisade and Ioniq 9. It brings a large central touchscreen, a slimmer driver display in place of a conventional instrument cluster, a two-spoke steering wheel and dual wireless charging. A rugged XRT variant joins the line-up for the first time, with skid plates, black cladding and exclusive alloy wheels aimed at outdoor-lifestyle buyers.

Hyundai has not disclosed engine or hybrid specifications, though the current generation's electrified options suggest continuity in that direction for markets where the Tucson competes heavily on efficiency. The company has confirmed only that the new model will go on sale in South Korea in the fourth quarter of this year, with other markets to follow through 2027.

For Indian buyers, the reveal carries a more complicated subtext. Hyundai discontinued the Tucson in India in late 2025, having sold it since 2022 as a locally assembled, diesel-and-petrol SUV priced between roughly ₹27 lakh and ₹34 lakh. Sales never gained traction: from 3,692 units in 2023, volumes fell to 1,543 in 2024 and to just 650 in 2025, undone in part by the Creta offering comparable practicality at a fraction of the price. Hyundai has given no indication that the redesigned Tucson will return to Indian showrooms, and any such plan should be treated as speculation rather than confirmed strategy.

The bigger story for Hyundai in India remains the Creta, which crossed 200,000 units in calendar 2025, its best year yet, and continues to anchor a portfolio weighted heavily towards SUVs. The company has also begun building out its electric lineup, led by the Creta Electric, even as EVs remain a small fraction of its overall Indian sales. Against that backdrop, the new Tucson's immediate relevance to India lies less in a showroom launch and more in how Hyundai's evolving design language and software platform eventually filter down to the models it actually sells here.
