When launched, this new sub-compact electric SUV from Hyundai will serve as an alternative to Tata Punch EV.
Hyundai is working on a new sub-compact electric SUV for the Indian market. In September 2025, at its Annual Investor Meet, Hyundai announced the development of a new A+ segment electric SUV that is slated to make its debut in India sometime in 2027. The company in an official statement, said that the SUV would be “the country's first EV designed specifically for local drivers” with an “India-centric design and features”.
The electric SUV has already been spotted on a few occasions previously both in India and abroad. It has once again been spied at a charging station somewhere in Chandigarh, parked next to a Tata Nexon EV. The upcoming battery-powered SUV is likely to be based on the Hyundai Inster EV sold in international markets.
As indicated by the latest spy image, the prototype was heavily wrapped in black camouflage, though it still revealed enough to gauge the overall design direction. Like the second-gen Venue and the Exter, this EV appears to adopt a tall-boy stance with a boxy and upright silhouette. The test unit in question showed slim, horizontally aligned LED taillamps, along with flush-fitting door handles and roof rails.
While the front-end details were not captured in these images, the EV is expected to feature a modern fascia with sleek LED DRLs and a blanked-off grille, while the primary headlamp units could be positioned lower on the bumper. It may also include protective body cladding and ride on aerodynamically optimised alloy wheels.

Hyundai’s upcoming B-segment EV appears to have a largely flat roofline complemented by sturdy roof rails. The window surrounds show a sharp, angular treatment, resembling those seen on the new Venue. The ORVMs appear to be rectangular in shape and could integrate cameras to support a 360-degree view system. Although the wheels are not fully visible, they seem to feature a dual-tone finish.
Another notable aspect is the positioning of the charging port on the front-left side, just above the fender. Hyundai follows varied charging port layouts across its EV lineup. For instance, models such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Hyundai Ioniq 6 have their charging ports on the right rear fender, whereas offerings like the Hyundai Creta Electric and Hyundai Inster EV place them at the front.
Slated to launch next year, the new micro electric SUV will potentially act as a rival to Tata Punch EV. The Punch EV is priced from ₹9.69 lakh (ex-showroom), while opting for the BaaS model brings the starting price down to ₹6.49 lakh. With high level of localisation, the yet unnamed Hyundai electric SUV is expected to match or may be just undercut the pricing of Tata Punch EV.
