Martin cuts into championship leader Francesco Bagnaia’s lead, now standing at 33 points.
What a spectacular start to the racing as the Indian GP Sprint race provided some epic drama as Prima Pramac Ducati’s Jorge Martin romped to a stellar win on Saturday. Martin didn’t put a step wrong all throughout the 11-lap race, managing to eat a bit into championship leader Francesco ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia’s points gap, which now stands at 33 points.
Martin grabbed the holeshot into the first turn from the middle of the front row as chaos ensued right behind him. Pecco managed to stay free as well and tried to stick to Martin’s tail but failed to do so, settling down for an easy second place on the day.
However, it was the worst start imaginable for pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi. He didn’t quite make a quick getaway, perhaps due to the absence of the new holeshot device that both Martin and Pecco’s GP23 have. To make matters worse, his Mooney VR46 teammate, Luca Marini, cooked up going into the first corner and nearly took both of them out of the race. Thankfully, Bez could continue as he rode the ride of the day, managing to slice through the field, ending the day in fifth. He was clearly the fastest man of the race and could’ve really given Martin a good run for his money had tragedy not struck him early on.
On the other hand, Marc Marquez had a rather brilliant day in the office. The Spaniard made hay when the sun shone, riding a splendid race to finish third in the Sprint. Marc mentioned that he didn’t anticipate this result and would take it as a positive step. He recognises tomorrow’s potential and aims to fight for the top 6.
Joan Mir (Repsol Honda Team) also got a brilliant start from fifth on the grid to put himself into third on the first lap. But it wasn't long before he fell into the clutches of teammate Marquez. However, the eight-time champ put himself in the top three. Disaster then came for Mir as a mistake saw him drop down the grid, and in a desperate attempt to make up lost ground, he hit the deck and was out of the race.
The main race is expected to be just as fast and furious. Expect Bez to be a bit more charged up and willing to take the fight to the other Ducatis.
