The Jeep Compass is now available with a diesel engine.

Jeep India has halted production of the petrol variant of the Compass SUV. We spoke with dealers across three cities in India, and they confirmed that the bookings for the petrol variant of the Compass have indeed been stopped. The Compass was available with the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine, which was compatible with the BS6 Phase 1 norms. However, the Phase 2 norms are more stringent, and while the company has the 2.4-litre petrol engine that is put in the Compass and then exported from India to other markets, it is unlikely that this will be launched in the country.

A Jeep India official said, "The premium SUV segment continues to enjoy strong demand for diesel powertrain. Jeep India will continue to invest and develop its efficient state-of-the-art 2.0 L MultiJet turbo diesel powertrains offering superior torque, lower emissions, and impressive fuel efficiency. Jeep India is committed to the market and has significant product plans for the future. We will continue to explore all possible engine and fuel options in line with the evolving market preferences to offer what is most relevant to our consumers."

The Jeep Compass has been a strong seller for the company, not just in India but in international markets as well. The petrol engine accounted for 50 per cent of sales of the Compass range and now with only the diesel on offer, it looks like there will be some impact on the overall sales.
