JK Tyre has become the 16th Indian business to join this exclusive club.
JK Tyre & Industries has become the first Indian tyre manufacturer to join the RE100 club, a global initiative that focuses on bringing all major influential businesses in the world who are committed to using 100 per cent renewable electricity. With this step, JK Tyre also becomes the 16th Indian business to join this prestigious initiative, and the second automobile company after Tata Motors. The Delhi-based tyre company managed to reach this pedestal after it had set a midterm goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emission intensity by 50 per cent. The company had set the target FY2030 to achieve this milestone, starting from 2019. From now it will focus on further advancing its sustainable practices in the industry and at the same time prepare for future evolving climate regulations.
Additionally, JK Tyre has also consistently increased its renewable energy by 2-5 per cent. Currently, JK Tyre sources 40 per cent of its energy from renewable sources. Since 2013-14, JK Tyre has already reduced its GHG emission by 64 per cent which helped it establish a benchmark in water usage across all its manufacturing sites in India and also achieve Zero Discharge, Zero-Waste-To-Landfill status, and eliminate single-use plastic.
Speaking on this occasion, Raghupati Singhania, Chairman & Managing Director, JK Tyre, said, “Our decision to join RE100 represents our unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility. Under the motto "today for tomorrow," we at JK Tyre believe that a sustainable future requires significant action today. As an environmentally conscious brand, energy efficiency and conservation remain at the top of our priority list.”
“JK Tyre’s decision to procure 100% renewable electricity for their operations by 2050 is a milestone commitment. It shows that renewable electricity can indeed be considered for large-scale, intensive manufacturing needs. We welcome them into the RE100 network and look forward to working with them – and to their progress,” added Divya Sharma, India Executive Director, Climate Group
