Kia India Joins Maruti Suzuki In Vehicle Dispatches Via Double-Decker Trains

The double-decker trains used by Kia have a capacity of carrying up to 264 units, while a regular train can carry around 100 units.

Kia India has started transporting its vehicles via trains via double-decker coaches, but it has been using the Indian Railways since 2020. Kia is not the first manufacturer in India to use double-decker trains, Maruti Suzuki has already been doing this for a while. Many manufacturers use the Indian Railways to transport their cars and SUVs across the country, in a bid to reduce their carbon emissions and make transportation easier.

The double-decker train can carry up to 264 units while a regular train carries around 100 units. For reference, the double-decker trains used by Maruti Suzuki carry around 318 units. The double-decker freight train was flagged off from Penukonda railway station in Andhra Pradesh. Kia India has transported more than 60,000 units using the Indian Railways network to the northern, western and eastern parts of the country.

Hardeep Singh Brar, Senior Vice President and Head of Sales & Marketing, Kia India, claims the double-decker train will help reduce waiting period of its cars. He added, “The launch of India’s first double-decker freight train for SUVs is a significant step in modernising the country's transportation infrastructure. This innovative, efficient, and eco-friendly logistics solution will help accelerate our progress toward meeting our annual growth targets, while reducing our carbon footprint and contributing to a more sustainable, cleaner, and connected future.”

For perspective, Hyundai has transported more than 5.37 lakh units using the railways since 2021 and has effectively prevented 63,452 tons of carbon emissions. Maruti Suzuki started using the Indian Railways as a vehicle transportation method in 2014 and in 10 years since, has saved around 10,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions and saved 270 million litres of fuel.
