Exports constitute a significant portion of revenue for most manufacturers.

Made-in-India two-wheeler exports have risen by an impressive 14% in the April-July period, with major manufacturers like Bajaj Auto, TVS Motor and Honda leading the charge with 40%, 25%, and 15% market shares, respectively. Here is the breakdown of what is happening with each of these leading brands and what the plans further.

Bajaj Auto

Bajaj Auto remains the top exporter, with a 40% market share, dispatching nearly half a million units overseas. The company saw a 5% year-on-year increase in exports, with significant growth in the 110-125cc and 125-150cc categories.

Despite challenging inflationary scenarios in some African markets, overseas shipments in the first four months of FY2025 would have been higher if not for these challenges, with demand picking up in ASEAN and Latin America. The company's new plant in Brazil, opened in June, will initially focus on manufacturing Dominar models, further expanding its export reach.

Bajaj had a busy first half with updates to the Pulsar lineup, the introduction of the new Pulsar NS400, and the world's first CNG production motorcycle. The brand appears to be introducing another motorcycle in the 125cc segment, and we have spotted it being tested recently.

TVS Motor Company

TVS is the second-largest exporter and reported a 14% increase in exports. These are driven primarily by strong demand for motorcycles. The company's scooter exports remained flat, but its overall market share stands at 25%.

TVS dispatched 313,453 units in April-July 2024 as motorcycle exports rose by 16% to 272,749 units, while scooter exports remained flat. TVS two-wheelers are sold in over 80 countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America, with recent entries into Nepal, Vietnam, and France. The company has also started exporting the BMW CE 02 electric scooter and its own TVS iQube, with 3,150 EV units exported in the last four months. Despite challenges in Red Sea transit times and African markets, CEO K N Radhakrishnan is optimistic about improving dispatches in Q2, citing a strong product lineup, including the new HLX 125 5-gear motorcycle, and opportunities in LATAM, Asia, and the Middle East as well as plans to expand electric mobility sales globally.

TVS has recently updated the TVS Ntorq 125 scooter with new colours and a few features. It is all set to launch an update for the Jupiter, which could feature a major design overhaul. Read more about it here.

Honda

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India saw a 14% increase in exports, with significant growth in both scooter and bike categories. The company's exports rose to 182,542 units, indicating a revival in demand for its products.

Honda

With scooters rising 76% to 108,939 units and bikes up 77% to 73,603 units it indicates a strong demand for HMSI products in export markets. The company has launched a strategic export growth program, including the inauguration of a new engine assembly line at its Global Resource Factory in Manesar, Gurugram, focused on CKD exports, with a daily production capacity of 600 engines for models ranging from 110cc to 300cc, catering to diverse global customer needs.

With strong exports, the company is also faring well in India, boasting major products among the highest-selling bikes and scooters. Furthermore, it is expected that Honda will introduce an impressive electric product to its lineup by the end of 2024.

Other Manufacturers

Hero MotoCorp saw a 33% increase in exports, driven by strong demand for its bikes. India Yamaha Motor reported a 28% increase in exports, while Suzuki Motorcycle India saw a decline of 24% due to a drop in scooter exports. Royal Enfield dispatched 28,278 bikes in the first four months of FY2025, a minor 2% increase year-on-year.
