The new XEV 9e is the flagship EV from the homegrown carmaker.
Mahindra has launched the XEV 9e, its flagship electric SUV under the newly created XEV sub-brand. Prices for the XEV 9e start at ₹21.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India) and the rest will be announced later. This significant launch is paired with the launch of another electric vehicle, the BE 6e, which will be marketed under Mahindra’s BE sub-brand. Both vehicles are part of Mahindra’s broader strategy to embrace electrification and establish a strong foothold in the electric vehicle (EV) market.
The XEV 9e stands out with its coupe-inspired design that combines elegance with functionality. The exterior is defined by a unique triangular headlamp setup and LED daytime running lights (DRLs) that stretch across the width of the vehicle. An inverted L-shaped connected LED DRL configuration complements the taillights, further enhancing its futuristic appeal. The muscular stance, accentuated by bold character lines, is paired with an illuminated Mahindra logo, adding to its visual identity.
This new electric SUV is built on Mahindra's state-of-the-art INGLO architecture, a platform designed specifically for electric vehicles. The architecture features a lightweight flat-floor skateboard structure that optimises weight distribution and boosts overall efficiency. Modular and scalable, the INGLO platform is versatile enough to support different vehicle configurations, making it a foundation for Mahindra’s future EV lineup. Safety is a key focus, with the use of ultra-high-strength boron steel and a protective cage to enhance occupant protection.
Thanks to the new platform, Mahindra was able to stretch the car to its maximum, allowing for a 4789 mm length while sitting on a 2775 mm wheelbase and 207 mm above the ground. The battery sits slightly above, at 222 mm above the ground, allowing for minimum exposure to the road below and safeguarding the area for damages below. Moreover, Mahindra also revealed the cabin room for the XEV 9e, 1006 mm headroom, 1055 mm legroom, and 1522 mm shoulder room. As far as storage space goes, the Mahindra XEV 9e has a boot space of 663-litre with a 150-litre frunk, the largest we’ve seen on an EV.
The interior of the XEV 9e features a triple-screen layout, with three 12.3-inch displays running on Mahindra’s Adrenox software. These screens manage everything from infotainment to driver information, ensuring a seamless digital experience. Additional features like a two-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated logo, wireless charging capabilities, and a panoramic sunroof add to the premium feel of the cabin. Safety and convenience are further enhanced with the inclusion of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
At the heart of the XEV 9e are two battery options: a 59 kWh unit and a larger 79 kWh unit, both utilising lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology. Known for its durability and safety, this battery chemistry supports fast-charging capabilities, allowing the vehicle to charge from 20 to 80 per cent in just 20 minutes using a 175 kW DC fast charger. Performance figures are equally impressive, with the powertrain delivering between 225 and 278 bhp for rear-wheel-drive models. Mahindra has also hinted at the possibility of all-wheel-drive variants in the future.
