India’s largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, has teased its first-ever electric SUV, the e Vitara. Ahead of its grand debut at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January 2025, the automaker has teased its upcoming EV, which will be manufactured at its state-of-the-art Gujarat facility. The e Vitara is in fact the same model that made its global debut a few months ago, and we believe that India will receive the exact same spec, in the exact same design.
Central to the e Vitara’s performance is its BEV powertrain, which combines an eAxle with lithium-iron-phosphate batteries. The Indian version of the e Vitara will come with two battery capacity options: 49 kWh and 61 kWh. Drive configurations include both two-wheel drive (2WD) and four-wheel drive (4WD), with seating for five passengers. In terms of power output, the 2WD model’s motor produces a maximum of 142 bhp, while the 4WD model offers a combined output of up to 181 bhp (172 bhp at the front and 64 bhp at the rear), along with a maximum torque of 300 Nm.
The e-Vitara SUV embraces a bold 'high-tech meets adventure' design theme, highlighted by its large tyres and extended wheelbase, creating a commanding presence. Accentuating its rugged appeal are black plastic wheel arch guards, lower body mouldings and tough bumpers and sills. At the rear, a full-width LED light bar enhances visibility while adding a futuristic touch to the muscular styling.
Measuring 4275 mm in length, the e-Vitara is 200 mm longer than the current hybrid model, offering more cabin space for five passengers. Despite its size, the lightest variant weighs just 1702 kg, making it a practical yet spacious option for adventurers and families alike.
To facilitate the adoption of EVs, Maruti Suzuki plans to leverage its extensive dealership and service network across India. The company is working to install fast-charging infrastructure at key dealerships and service centres. By integrating a robust charging ecosystem, Maruti Suzuki aims to provide a seamless and customer-friendly EV ownership experience. With local manufacturing, Maruti Suzuki is expected to price the e-Vitara competitively, taking on rivals in the sub-₹30 lakh EV segment.
