Another major setback for the reigning champion, and this time, the injury will take time to heal.
Reigning world champion Jorge Martin will miss the upcoming Spanish MotoGP at Jerez as he recovers from injuries sustained during his return to racing in Qatar. Aprilia has confirmed that Lorenzo Savadori will take Martin's place for the April 25-27 event.
Martin made his official debut with Aprilia at the Lusail circuit last weekend, but his race ended prematurely when he crashed and was subsequently struck by Fabio Di Giannantonio's approaching bike. After receiving immediate trackside assistance, Martin was transported to a hospital in Doha, where medical staff diagnosed him with hemopneumothorax associated with multiple rib fractures.
Aprilia released a statement regarding Martin's condition, noting that he is experiencing "slow but steady improvement" following examinations at both the circuit's medical centre and Hamad General Hospital. The statement explained that the pleuropulmonary trauma required immediate drainage to allow lung re-expansion and that the rib fractures are causing significant pain, limiting his basic physical activity.
The team is monitoring the situation carefully, emphasising that the lung must be stably expanded before mechanical aspiration can be discontinued and the drainage system removed. Only after additional X-ray assessments will the drainage be completely removed. Once Martin's condition stabilises sufficiently, arrangements will be made for his assisted return to Europe.
This represents yet another setback in what has been a disastrous start to Martin's title defence. His troubles began during pre-season testing in February at Sepang, where he suffered multiple fractures in a crash. A second incident occurred prior to the Thai GP when Martin sustained further fractures in a training accident.
Despite these challenges, Martin remains positive, stating: "Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has supported me. These have been difficult days, but now I'm starting to move a bit more and feel better, although the pain is still intense. I'd like to thank Aprilia, my fans and everyone who is helping me. I will continue to fight to be one of the strongest ever."
