The sixth-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class promises to deliver a blend of evolution and innovation.
Mercedes-Benz has pulled the curtains on its much-anticipated sixth-generation E-Class (W214) model at the ongoing 2023 International Motor Show at the Munich Exhibition Centre, blending bold exterior design with new interior technologies. Debuting in 2016, the fifth-generation E-Class (W213) set high standards, and its successor aims to follow suit with a host of new features and advancements.
One of the standout features of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is its interior. Mercedes offered a sneak peek in February, highlighting the impressive MBUX hyperscreen, and now again in Munich, which boasts full functionality across all trim levels. The interior is a technological marvel, featuring up to five screens and cameras, promising an immersive and futuristic driving experience.
While the E-Class body shape remains largely unchanged, there are noticeable updates, particularly at the front. A glossy black panel connects the standard LED headlights, creating an equalizer effect. The grille has been slightly enlarged and can be accentuated with chrome or additional LED running lights. For those seeking advanced lighting options, digital headlights with projection functionality are available. At the rear, sleek LED taillights incorporate triangular star elements, and door handles come as standard. Wheel sizes range from 18 to 21 inches, catering to various preferences.
The centrepiece of the E-Class's interior is the widescreen display, similar to the one found in the EQE model. It seamlessly integrates a widescreen driver's display into the central screen, offering two display styles: "sports" for driving enthusiasts with vibrant red lighting and a central tachometer, and the more traditional "classic" style.
In terms of performance and handling, the new E-Class offers optional rear steering, allowing the rear wheels to turn by 4.5 degrees at speeds below 90 kmph. This feature significantly reduces the turning radius of the sedan, enhancing maneuverability. At higher speeds, the rear wheels can still turn up to 2.5 degrees, promoting stability and overall driving performance. This feature is available with the optional Technology Package, which also includes an Airmatic air suspension system with continuously adjustable damping. Additionally, it maintains the car's ground clearance and, at speeds exceeding 120 kmph, lowers the E-Class by over 15 cm to improve efficiency and lower the centre of gravity.
Under the hood, Mercedes-Benz maintains continuity by retaining (almost) the same engines as in the previous E-Class. The E 350 houses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, now enhanced with a mild hybrid system. This setup delivers an estimated 253 bhp and 400 Nm of torque, with an additional 18 bhp available through supercharging.
The E 450 boasts a turbocharged inline-six engine also equipped with a mild hybrid system, offering a more robust 373 bhp and 500 Nm of torque, with the option for an additional 18 bhp. While performance and efficiency figures are yet to be disclosed, it's worth noting that a plug-in hybrid variant will not be available for the U.S. market.
The sixth-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class promises to deliver a captivating blend of evolution and innovation, keeping the E-Class tradition alive while embracing cutting-edge technology and comfort features. As Mercedes-Benz continues to raise the bar for luxury vehicles, the E-Class aims to impress drivers and enthusiasts alike.
