Volkswagen presented the ID. GTI Concept, the electrified version of the iconic GTI.
At the recent IAA Mobility event in Munich, Volkswagen presented the ID. GTI Concept offers a glimpse into how the iconic GTI label will make its transition into the electric era. This concept car embodies the spirit of GTI—sporty, technologically advanced, and accessible, all while being fully electric and environmentally friendly. Volkswagen aims to maintain the essence of GTI's driving pleasure and sustainability in this new electric incarnation.
Volkswagen says the ID. GTI Concept adheres to the principles of affordability and performance, a hallmark of the GTI brand. With its distinctive design and powerful proportions, the ID. GTI Concept stands out in the electric vehicle market. It boasts a compact size, measuring 4,104 mm in length, a generous wheelbase of 2,600 mm, and large 20-inch alloy wheels with performance tires, underlining its sporty character.
At the front, the ID. GTI Concept retains the iconic red radiator grille surround, a hallmark of the GTI lineage. The headlights feature IQ. LIGHT LED matrix technology, and the Volkswagen badge is illuminated in white, adding a futuristic touch. The rear of the ID. GTI Concept showcases a black roof spoiler and dark-tinted LED tail light clusters, reminiscent of classic GTI design elements. The two-part rear diffuser, inspired by motorsports, enhances aerodynamics while maintaining the GTI's distinctive appearance.
Inside the ID. GTI Concept, Volkswagen continues to pay homage to its GTI heritage. The steering wheel features a 12 o'clock marker and a GTI Experience Control designed like a golf ball, a nod to the original GTI. The digital cockpit offers various modes, including a vintage mode that replicates the instruments of the classic Golf GTI. The ID. GTI Concept also introduces an augmented reality head-up display that projects information on the windshield for both the driver and the front passenger. In GTI mode, the background lighting and displays switch to GTI Red Turbo, enhancing the driving experience.
In terms of usability, the ID. GTI Concept accommodates five passengers and offers a generous 490-litre luggage compartment. It shares practical features with the ID. 2all, such as a stowage box under the luggage compartment floor and a 50-litre stowage area under the rear bench seat.
With its efficient drive system, lightweight construction, and spacious interior, the ID. GTI Concept is poised to excel not only in urban environments but also on the racetrack and during long journeys. Volkswagen's commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup demonstrates a forward-looking approach to sustainable mobility. The ID. GTI Concept blends the rich heritage of the GTI brand with the promise of electric driving, offering a glimpse into the exciting future of Volkswagen's electric vehicle portfolio.
