Shared Engine Keeps Costs Down for MV Agusta
MV Agusta has been synonymous with motorcycle racing dominance in the 1950s and 70s, and is poised for a return to MotoGP. The company will enter the grid in 2027 partnering with KTM which currently owns MV Agusta.
While MV Agusta will race under its banner and potentially with a unique design, it will leverage KTM's MotoGP engine technology. This is a cost-saving measure, as developing a competitive MotoGP engine from scratch is a highly expensive endeavour.
Exactly which KTM engine MV Agusta will use remains to be seen. Currently, KTM employs a 1,000 cc V4 engine in its MotoGP race bikes. However, new MotoGP regulations coming into effect in 2027 will limit engine displacement to 850cc. This shift presents an opportunity for MV Agusta to potentially influence the development of a new, shared engine platform with KTM.
The delay until 2027 stems from MV Agusta's need to focus on shoring up its financial health. There is also the reason for ramping up production capacity. Pierer Mobility, the Austrian conglomerate that owns both KTM and MV Agusta, has a multi-pronged approach to revitalise the Italian brand. This includes expanding MV Agusta's international presence by establishing a stronger dealership network in key markets around the world.
Additionally, Pierer Mobility aims to boost MV Agusta's production capacity to 10,000 units by 2027. This significant increase in production volume will not only allow MV Agusta to meet the demands of a global audience but also generate revenue to support its racing endeavours. By focusing on these crucial aspects in the coming years, MV Agusta will be well-positioned for a successful return to MotoGP in 2027.
