2024 seems to be a busy year for Bajaj Auto. After reviving the entire Pulsar line-up that crescendoed with the launch of the biggest capacity Pulsar yet – the Pulsar NS400Z – the Chakan-based bikemaker will now prepare for a few more launches, the third 400 cc Triumph motorcycle being one of them. As confirmed by Rajiv Bajaj himself, this upcoming bike will launch later this year. And we think it will likely be the Thruxton 400, or at least a cafe racer.
To be based on the same platform that underpins both the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X, the 400 cc cafe racer will be sort of built on the former. The reason why we are hesitant that Triumph might call it a Thruxton is because it doesn’t look like the larger 1200 cc cafe racer. It does look quite like the Speed Triple 1200 RR and the spied bike also showcases a similarly polished half-fairing design. This will add quite the visual mass to the otherwise simple-looking Speed 400.

The hardware components like the 43 mm USD fork, and monoshock setup, along with 17-inch alloy wheels will also remain the same. There might be a slight change in the rider triangle to suit the bike’s cafe racer stance. Aside from that, mechanically too, the cafe racer will carry forward the same 399 cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine that produces 39.5 bhp and 37.5 Nm, mated to a 6-speed gearbox.
Triumph currently retails the Speed 400 at ₹2.35 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and the Scrambler 400X at ₹2.65 lakh (all ex-showroom, Delhi). The upcoming bike will most likely slot in between these two, roughly at ₹2.50 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). We have recently tested the Speed 400 with the Autologue ‘Hack 400’ cafe racer fairing kit. To find out how the bike handles with the new semi-fairing design, check out the video below.
