Toyota has revealed the ninth-generation Camry and in its latest avatar, it will be a hybrid-only model. It also gets new styling, features and an updated cabin.
The design of the new Camry is more evolutionary than revolutionary, compared to the eight-gen model that’s currently on sale in India. The ninth-gen model’s fascia is similar to other recent Toyota sedans like the Crown and Prius.
The new Camry gets a massive, colour-matched grille in the bumper with a thin upper grille connecting the headlights. It also gets inverted L-shaped air intakes flanking the lower grille. Depending on the variant, the Camry gets either a hexagonal pattern or horizontal slats in the lower grille. The headlights of the new Camry get C-shaped LED daytime running lights that surround the panel that houses the Toyota logo.
In profile, the Camry retains a very similar silhouette to the outgoing model. Its beltline has the same downward swooping design that slants upwards towards the C-pillar. It also has a similar character line between the front and rear wheels. Even at the back, it is instantly recognisable as a Camry but can be distinguished. The taillights also have a C-shaped design and the roofline merges into the back to make an integrated spoiler.
Inside, the new Camry gets a completely new dashboard with a massive 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Depending on the variant, it also gets an 8.0-inch touchscreen or a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster. The infotainment gets wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well as wireless charging as standard. It also has a 10.0-inch head-up display.
Its two-tone leather dashboard gets leather inserts on the lower half with an optional quilt pattern. The ninth-gen Camry also gets dual-zone climate control with a small display and the physical HVAC controls are placed beneath the touchscreen. The new Camry also gets a panoramic sunroof.
Safety features on the new Camry include Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 ADAS suite with features like cross-traffic alert, lane change assist, automatic braking, cruise control, road sign assist and more.
The ninth-gen Camry will solely be available with a hybrid powertrain that includes a 2.5-litre petrol engine and two electric motors which produce 225 bhp (combined). The Camry will also get an all-wheel drive system that will produce 232 bhp.
The Camry also gets a retuned suspension setup that Toyota claims will enhance responsiveness and improve handling. Sportier trims of the Camry will get a specific sport-tuned suspension setup for better comfort along with better handling.
Currently, Toyota India sells the eight-gen Camry hybrid in India that is priced at ₹46.17 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). As it is now the only executive sedan left in the market, it remains to be seen if the new Camry will make it to Indian shores.
